Svmnhonv notes
by John Chagy
Sung Kwak led the Atlanta
Symphony last weekend in a
program opening with Mozart’s
Symphony No. 29 in A major, K
201, with an unassuming but
warm, lyrical reading of this
attractive, youthful work. Mozart
was 18 when he composed it and it
remains one of the most popular of
his earlier orchestral efforts.
Guest violinist, Elman Oliveira,
winner of the gold medal in the
1978 Tchaikovsky International
violin competition, provided a
spectacular, scintillating virtuoso
performance of Glazunov’s,
Concerto for violin. Op, 82.
His rich, singing tone and
incredible technic drew a standing
ovation from the excited listeners.
The melancholy theme, recurring
often throughout the entire work,
and the difficult embroidery of
passage work in the finale made for
a captivating musical treat.
The Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures
at an exhibition were firmly held
together by conductor Sung
Kwak, leading to a fiery
conclusion in the powerful Gate*
of Kiev section. There were some
moments when the horns were
piercingly out of balance but
generally the orchestra was
admirable.
