Jewish wedding
—London style
by loll Frinberg Chase

The chance to go to London,
England to be present at the
wedding of a cousin we did not
know to meet family we never
knew existed in such quantity and
with such warmth was given to
my husband, Philip and me by my
parents, Norma and Morris
Femberg of Columbus, last
month. The trip also included my
two younger sisters, Helen F.
Jenkins of Palm Beach, (Fla.) and
Ina Fcinberg of Atlanta.
From the time the invitation
arrived, large, engraved in silver
and personalized with our names,
we knew that this trip would he
special beyond all expectations
The choice of an appropriate
wedding gift was difficult, not
knowing anything about the bride

and groom, but the final decision,
a Nancy Fried, Charleston Jewish
artist, original Ketubah. turned
out to be the piece de resistance.
Not only was it unique and
exquisite, but its kashruth was
cleared with only one change: the
words “North America” in
Aramaic had to he changed to
“Great Britain ” But changed by
the Chief Rabbi of the British
Empire himself’ Yes, Rabbi
Immanuel Jacobovitz, recently in
the news due to his statement on
the West Bank and Jerusalem,
affixed his seal, signature and
explanation of the correction and
pronounced it “fit to be used."
At the wedding, the bride was
blessed with the sunshine that we
saw very rarely during our trip,
sunshine that poured through the
most magnificent stained glass
windows surrounding the entire
sanctuary of the St. John’s Woods
Synagogue! The ketubah was
signed on the center bimah
immediately following its reading
during the ceremony, not prior to
the ceremony as is our custom.
And following the signing, the
officiating minister held it high
“for the entire congregation to
observe the beautiful ketubah that
has come from across the Atlantic
Ocean to Betsy and Edmund by the
cousins in Carolina!” The
“cousins in Carolina" (Philip and

acknowledgement and excited
with its acceptance.
Women were allowed in the
main floor section of seating for
the wedding, but we were still
separated, women on one side and
men on the other. Most men wore
top hats and hombergs rather than
kipas
We were told by the minister, the
title most used there instead of
“rabbi," that ketubahs are legal
documents in Great Britain and
the parents’ ketubah must be
presented in order for a son to
begin Bar Mitzva preparations or
for a couple to begin marriage
plans.
Following the ceremony, we
drove to a beautifully ornate
kosher catering hall, approved by
the Beth Din of Great Britain for
that date, for the buffet and ball. A
liveried toastmaster announced
each guest as they entered the hall:
in a booming voice, “Mr. and Mrs.
Philip Chase of Charleston, South
Carolina, United States of
America! r and that’s how we were
presented to the receiving line.
Place cards with a photograph
of the bridal couple and engraved
programs containing the menu and
the order of events were at each
place-setting. A toast to Her
Majesty, the Queen, all standing
with wine glasses raised high; then
we all sang “God Save the Queen,"
a toast to Yitzhak Navon,
president of Israel, and we all sang
“Hatikvah;" a bruchah and the
eight-course dinner began...with
chicken soup and kreplach
included. Other toasts were made
to the bride and groom throughout
the evening The band played
music from the 1930a through the
’50s, with Al Jobon’s a top
favorite. Especially for us, “Nothing
