Judaic books fill shelves
of Notre Dame University
The Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, University of Notre Dame
president; Mrs. Edward N. Abrams, Mr. Abrams and Rabbi Marc H.
Tanenbaum.
Tics between Christianity and
Judaism was a recurring theme
when Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum,
national interreligious affairs
director of the American Jewish
Committee, delivered the recent
inaugural lecture for the Alfred R.
and Lee Abrams Collection in
Hebrew and Jewish Studies at
Notre Dame University in South
Bend, lnd.
Rabbi Tanenbaum opened the
ceremonies honoring the endowed
collection of books and other
resource material to further Judaic
Studies within the theology
department. The collection was
established in memory of the 1921
Notre Dame alumnus and his wife
by their son and his wife. Mr. and
Mrs. Edward M. Abrams of
Atlanta, and by the Abrams
Foundation, an affiliate of
Abrams Industries, Inc.
Rabbi Tanenbaum said placing
the Jewish and Hebrew books and
materials in a Catholic university
was profoundly symbolic. He cited
the need to fuse moral
responsibility and knowledge, to
insure that its purpose is used for
"the good of humanity”. He hailed
the Abrams gift as a recognition of
this truth and “a bedrock upon
which others must be built.”
AI Abrams was the youngest of
eight children in a poor Chicago
family. He paid for his education
by holding several jobs
concurrently while he was a
student. Abrams began his studies
at Notre Dame in I916, but left in
1917 to serve in the army during
World War l, returning to
graduate in 1921 with a degree in
civil engineering.
In 1923, he married Sara Lee
Kaufman and together they
established a construction
company in West Palm Beach,
Fla., which they moved to South
Bend, lnd., in 1927, and to Atlanta
in I940. Today, Abrams
Industries, Inc. is primarily
involved in building construction,
real estate and fixture
manufacturing.
Ed Abrams is president of the
firm. His wife, Ann Uhry Abrams,
an assistant professor of art history
at Spellman College, is presently a
postdoctoral research fellow at the
Smithsonian Institution.

Mention Weizman, Ben Gurion,
Dayan, and everyone knows who
they are. Mention Navon, and few
have heard of him. He does not
make the headlines. He is the
president of Israel. As part of
the National Association of
Temple Educators (NATE) conven

privilege of meeting the man who
occupies the highest position of
state (not the most powerful) in
Israel.

Sephardi Chief Rabbis of
Palestine, heads of Yeshivot
(Sephardi), communal presidents,
rabbis, and scribes. This family can
trace 300 years of continuous
residency in Jerusalem.
President Navon graduated
from the Hebrew University
majoring in Islamic culture,.
Arabic and Hebrew literature. He
fought in the Hagganah during the
War of Independence and in 1952
became David Ben Gurion’s
advisor and secretary. Later he was
elected a member of the Knesset
(Israel's Parliament), was deputy
speaker of the House and
chairman of the Defense and
Foreign Affairs Committee until
the Knesset elected him
president—the first president of
Israel from a Sephardi

has published many articles and

English, Arabic and Spanish. He
is married to the former Ophira
Reznikov, who has a masters and
honorary degree from the
University of Georgia. They have
two daughters.
So much for the biographical
data of the fifth president of Israel.
What is important is that Navon is
well-respected and loved by all
segments of the Israeli society,
quite an achievement for anyone
when you consider a society that is
made up of religious and secular
Sephardi (Spanish) and
Ashkenazi (Eastern European),
not to mention two dozen political
parties.
When he invited the visiting
educators to the president's house,
