Mizrachi Women meet Falasha
Eliks Mati, a Falasha Jew
originally from Ethiopia who is
today an Israeli citizen and a
member of a kibbutz, will address
the Atlanta and Geshcr Tzion
Chapters of American Mizrachi
Women at 8 p.m., Monday, March
2, at the Hebrew Academy of
Atlanta. The meeting is open to the
public.
Mati, 34, came to American
Mizrachi Women's Kfar Batya
Youth Village in Israel in 1953, as
one of a group of Falasha
youngsters brought by the Jewish
Agency for training in Jewish
Studies and Vocational
Education, so they could return to
Ethiopia as teachers in Falasha
villages. When he graduated from
AM W's Kfar Batya, six years later,
the Jewish Agency schools in
Ethiopia had ceased to function
and he decided to remain in Israel.
He lives with his wife and three
daughters on Kibbutz Netzer
Sereni, near Rishon L’Tzion,
where he makes finely crafted
holographic (three dimensional)
jewelry. Like all Israeli men, he
serves in the Israeli army each year
Mati is an officer in the
Association of Falasha Immigrants
to Israel He is an expert on
musical instruments of the
Falashas and fashions the
traditional instruments as a
hobby.
Elias Mati
Mati is currently in the U.S. on a
six-week speaking tour under the
auspices of American Mizrachi
Women.
The Falashas have been
officially recognized as Jews by
numerous halachic authorities
throughout the ages and share with
Jews the world over the right to
become citizens of Israel under the
Law of Return. In 1972 Israel’s
Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ovadia
Yossef, and in 1975 Israel’s
Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Shlomo
Goren, joined a long list of
distinguished rabbinical figures
who have reaffirmed the
Jewishness of this black tribe.
American Mizrachi Women
have been supportive of the
Falashas since the 1950s.
