Halper kicks off NCJW week
Marice Halper, president of the
International Council ol Jewish
Women, will kick off NCJW week
for the Atlanta Section at 10 a m.
Monday, Jan. 18, at the home of
Carla Silver A light breakfast will
be served.
Mrs. Halper is serving a three-
year term as president of the
International Council of Jewish
Women, whose affihates total I
million members in 31 countries.
She is active at the national level,
having served as a national board
member since 1967 and as a
national vice president. She is on
the national executive committee,
and also on the board of directors
of the NCJW Research Institute Mrs. Halper
for Innovation in Education. Reservations for the breakfast
located at the Hebrew University meeting should be made by calling

Stein to teach special Emanu-EI women
course on modern Israel host Cantor Goodfriend
Dr. Kenneth Stein, assistant
professor of Middle Eastern
history at Emory University, will
conduct an eight-session course on
the History of Modern Israel, 1881-
1981, in conjunction with the
Hebrew Academy.
The course will begin at 7 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 24, and will continue
alternate Sundays at the Hebrew
Academy.
Tuition is $ 120 a person, with all
proceeds going to the Academy.

Nathan Blass award
to be given by daughter
A highlight of the Epstein
School Founders’ Dinner on
Sunday, Jan. 31, will be the
presentation of the Nathan Blass
Award which goes to a middle
school student selected for
superior character and excellence
in scholarship.
The Nathan Blass Award was
made possible by an endowment
gift from his wife, Mrs. Shirley
Blass Weitz, and his children. Dr.
Michael Blass, Mrs. Renie Blass
Weinstein and Mrs. Debbie Blass
Corenblum.
Mrs. Corenblum, a teacher in
the Epstein School, will make the
presentation of the award.
The dinner, which will honor
Sylvan Makover for his service to
education and the Jewish
community, will be held at the
Ahavath Achim Synagogue.

JWV, 1980 to install
officers at dinner
JWV Post 1980 will have its
annual installation dinner and
dance on Saturday, Feb. 6. at the
Hyatt Riviera.
The dinner will cost $ 15 a person

Sisterhood will hold its meeting at

City of Hope, Spirit
of Life to meet Jan. 19
The City of Hope, Spirit of Life
Chapter will hold a general
meeting at 9:30 a m. Tuesday, Jan.

The program will feature Dr.
Roy Moore, journalism professor
at Georgia State University, who
will discuss "Television and its

to discuss education
Shearith Israel's workshop on
Jewish Parenting continues with a
session entitled “What School
Should My Child Attend...Elemen- 1
tary Education." The workshop

Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the
synagogue.
Featured speaker for the
evening will be Dr Ephraim
Frankel, director of the Hebrew
Academy of Atlanta. Discussion
will focus on the development of
Jewish dav schools and afternoon
schools in the American Jewish
community, the advantages of
each, and the choice which each
parent must make

Lenox ORT to hear
about Hungary Jews
The Lenox Chapter of Women’s
American ORT will have its next
meeting at noon Tuesday, Jan. 19,
at the Western Sizzlin’, 3172
Roswell Road.
The speaker, Lou Glenn, will
speak about her impressions of
Hungary as a Jewish Community.
Glenn has recently returned
from a trip to Hungary.
Atlanta AMW plans
meeting, cake sale
The Atlanta Chapter of
American Mizrachi Women will
have an open board meeting at
2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the
AJCC Youth Lounge.
The meeting will be dedicated to
“Federation Month.”
A speaker from the Women’s
Division will address the meeting.
There will be a donor evaluation
and the new slate of officers will be
presented. Refreshments will be
served.
AMW plans its cake sale for
Thursday, Feb. 11. Eva Iteld is
chairman of the bake sale.

Sharsharet Hadassah
to meet Jan. 19
The Sharsharet group of
Hadassah will hold its regular
meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19,
at the home of Betty Roth in the

Speaker for the evening will be
Eudora Rogers, chairperson,
Legal Status Women of the League
of Women Voters of Georgia. Her
topic will be “Update of the
Women’s Movement.”

Emanu-EI adult Classes
to begin Jan. 18
Temple Emanu-El’s adult
education classes are preparing for
the following series:
Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday,
Jan 18, “The Shabbat Service,”
taught by Rabbi Donald Tam, will
include everything there is to know
about the Shabbat service.
Melodies will be taught and
participants may bring tape
recorders
At 8:15 p.m., also beginning
Jan. 18. will be “The Medieval
Jewish Philosophy.” “Rabbi Tam
will discuss four Jewish
philosophers of the Medievel
period: Saadia Gaon, Solomon
lbn Gabirol, Judah HaLevi and
Moses Ben Maimon(Maimomdes).
Intermediate Hebrew will also be
taught at 8:15. The only
prerequisite is knowing the
Hebrew alphabet. The course will
be taught by Jeff Rosenberg.
At noon on Tuesdays, beginning
Jan. 19, “Studies in the Book of
B'reshet (Genesis)," will be taught
by Rabbi lam

Peace dialogue unites
former Mideast enemies
Two journalists, one Egyptian
and one Israeli, will be in Atlanta
Saturday evening, Jan. 16, to
spark a discussion on peace
possibilities in the Middle East.
Gideon Samet, U.S. correspondent
for the Israeli daily, Ha’Aretz, and
Ahmed Abushadi, Washington
correspondent for the Egyptian
daily, Al-Akhbar El-Yom, will
speak at 8 p.m. in the B’nai Torah
auditorium. Calvary Chapel, 300
Johnson Ferry Road in Sandy
Springs.
The dialogue is sponsored by the
Northside synagogues of Beth
Shalom, B’nai Torah and Emanu-
EI. Tickets are $9 for patrons and
$5 each for general admission.

Metzel to chair meeting
Jackie Metzel will be chairman
of the Temple Sinai-JNF nachala
dessert meeting to be held at 7:30
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Temple
Sinai.
Since the Metzels' visit to Israel
in 1974, they have had a desire to
help in the developing of land. A
nachala, which is composed of 20
dunams or five acres, will be
developed in the Galilee by Temple
Sinai.
Mrs. Metzel's activities include
being a charter member of Temple
Sinai and member of the Atlanta
JNF Board. She has been on the
Temple Sinai board of education,
co-editor of the “Kehillah,” was a
religous school teacher, vice
president of the synagogue, and
was a mimber of the Atlanta
Board of Jewish Education. The
Mrs. Metzel
mother of two children, she is a
real estate agent.
The public is invited to the
meeting at no charge, although
