Ahavath Achim to present recital May 9
I he Cultural Arts Committee of
the Ahavath Achim Synagogue
plans a series ol Sunday afternoon
concerts.
On Mother’s Day. Sunday. May
4, at 4:30 p.m. in Ellman Chapel,
there will be a duo-recitai featuring
Christopher Rex playing the cello
and Rachel Oliver at the piano.
Christopher Rex. the principal
cellist of the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra, began his musical
training at age 4 on the piano. At 8
he began studying the cello.
Following his graduation from the
Curtis Institute of Music in 1972,
Rex studied for two years with
Leonard Rose at the Julliard
School. He was a member of the
Philadelphia orchestra for seven
years, and has taught extensively
at Gettysburg College and the New
School of Music. In April 1979, he
won the string prize in the National
Federation of Music Clubs Young
Artists Competition, the first
cellist ever to win.
Born in Jerusalem, Mrs. Oliver
studied with Professor Alfred
Schroeder at the Conservatory and
Academy of Music. She played
soloist with the K.ol Yisroel
Symphony Orchestra and the
Ramat Gan Chamber Orchestra.
In 1958. violinist Isaac Stern and
Tikvah/Aliyah plans
closing installation, brunch
Tikvah Aliyah Hadassah will
hold its closing installation and
brunch at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Beth Shalom youth
sponsor shabbat
The Havarah Senior Youth
Group of Congregation Beth
Shalom is sponsoring an oneg for
the congregation at Friday evening
services. May 7, and will conduct
the service for the evening.
The youth group, consisting of
eighth to 12th grade members, has
had a very active year Thev have
acted as baby sitters for manv
services. Recently they donated
basketball equipment to the
synagogue and are planning to
participate in the Walk-A-Thon on
May 2. Most of the group
members have recently become
certified in CPR

Mrs. Oliver
pianist Claudio Arrau selected
Mrs. Oliver as one of six young
pianists in the Arturo Rubenstem
Competition.
On Rubenstem's recommendation,
Mrs. Oliver went abroad and
studied with pianist Stephen
Askenase and chamber music with
violinist Andre Gertler While in
Belgium, she won the first prize for
piano in the chamber music section
of the Royal Conservatoire. She
was also awarded the Laure Van
Cutsem prize, as outstanding
pianist Before moving to Atlanta
from Michigan, Mrs. Oliver gave
Nico Castel to
Metropolitan Opera tenor Nico
Castel. whose repertoire has 145
roles encompassing manv different
languages and styles, will
participate in Or VeShalom's
Friday night service on Vlav 7 at
8:30 p.m. The tenor will sing
selections from the Sephardic
religious ritual and then follow
with his performance of Israeli,
Yiddish, and Ladino romances.
An oneg shabbat will follow
Castel is an artist with both the
Metropolitan Opera and the New
York City Opera. He has also
officiated as a cantor for 20 years
and has been the cantor of the
Scarsdale Synagogue in New York
lor the last 15 years. He is an
associate professor at New York
University, lecturing on diction in
four foreign languages. Castel
inherited his multi-lingual abilities
trom his late mother, who spoke-
eight languages, and his lather, who
spoke 13.

expands in Atlanta
The Jewish Family and
Children’s Bureau is expanding its
program of home-delivered meals
to elderly people. It is the only
kosher Meals on Wheels program
in Atlanta.

The program functions with the
help of volunteer drivers. Anyone
with two hours a week to spare as a
driver to deliver the meals is
needed. If interested, call Marsha

the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Sunday’s program will include
works by Couperin, Bruch,
Shostakovich, Schumann,
Chopin, and Saint-Saens.

from a family of Orthodox
Sephardic rabbis and scholars who
trace their ancestry back to the
medieval Spanish province of
Castile. He began his musical
studies in Venezuela and

In 1958, Castel was selected as
first winner of the “Joy of Singing”
competition and since that time he
has seen his career span the fields
of opera, concerts and musical
recitals of varied styles and
languages all over the world.
Castel has accumulated a vast
repertoire of Jewish music:
Liturgical. Yiddish, Israeli, and
especially Ladino. His versatility
includes songs of the liturgy taken
from all over the world, sung in
either Sephardic or Ashkenazi
tradition. His recent album
"Sefared-the Sephardic
Tradition in Ladino Song,” has
received high praise and is
currently available m the
synagogue’s gift shop.

reunion June 26 and 27 in Atlanta.
