Crawford left a message
Following is l he text of the sfteet h i if
Dr. Leo Pine which was given Iasi
week ai the presentation of the
Holocaust materials from the Fred
Crawford Witness to ihe
Holocaust project to the Cantor
Isaac and Hens Goodfriend
collection at Emory University.
Dr. Pine is one of the liberators
who shared his experience with the
Witness project
My words must be presented in
the context of my being a Jew, of
my being a United States citizen
and my being a war veteran. I have
three points to make.
First, what was Fred Crawford’s
message? His message and that of
the Holocaust committee is...it
happened; it is true. It is
unbelievable that one should
doubt We have photos, movies.
news reels But people must be
taught to recognize and
understand reality; but many do
not wish to understand
Life in the United States today is
difficult for the realist. Language is
often used to confuse rather than
to inform. Through our television,
we are served daily a diet of “real
unreality” mixed with a glimmer of
history How do we discriminate?
We can eat our dinner and watch in
color while millions of blacks in
Biafra starve...we can observe
Russian patrols in Poland and
Afghanistan, or the Vietnamese
struggling to escape through the
jungles. And then with a flick, we
see the same scenes in the context
of a TV play or movie. The same
actress who fought the Nazi
underground can dance and love
with the PLO. What is real what
is not?
II the elimination of six million
can be made by simple executive
order in a nation once recognized
as a scientific mecca of the world,
then anything can be true, and
nothing can be left to the
imagination. Everything is real.
Well, the Holocaust was real and
our world better understand it.
Second, why is it important to
know the Holocaust as reality?
Because if we do not know this as
reality, we may repeat it here in the
United States. That same reality
may threaten us inside, but without
question, is threatening us today —
from the outside. Since words
alone are not enough, our senses
must be sharpened to recognize it
Ehus, we must understand that
actions speak louder than words.
We must judge our government
and that of other nations. Their
behavior, their accomplishments,
their structure must register on our
minds so that we can taste the
corruptness if it arises. We must
know the reality of a threat to us as
individuals and that which may
threaten our haven of freedom and
justice which we call the United
States of America.
Third, what is the function of the
Witness to the Holocaust
program? Why, to beat the drum
so all can hear, hopefully to
understand. My wife teaches at
several major high schools in the
area. In one there is a Jewish girl
who insisted that the Holocaust
was propaganda. In another are
several students who refuse to rise
to pledge allegiance to the flag
Yet, reality is all around them. In
the seats next to them are Cubans,
Russians, Persians and South
Americans; all youngstudents who
can still taste their own reality and
terror along the paths to this
country All of our American-born
do not hear the drum
Wc will never have another Fred
Crawford, for human genetics is
such that it cannot be But
hopefully there will be others like
him who will help make this
generation of oui children listen.
Il is they, not we, who are on the
razor’s edge
