Georgians sign House resolution
by Joseph Polakoff
rSI s Washington correspondent
WASHINGTON—The House
Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on
Human Rights and International
Organizations Tuesday adopted a
new measure warning the United
Nations that denying Israel its full
rights in the U N. itself or any of its
constituent agencies will mean that
“the United States will suspend its
participation in the General
Assembly” or other parts of the
United Nations and “withhold its
assessed contributions” to the
U.N. itself or its specialized
participate in the General
Assembly of the United Nationsor
any specialized agency of the
United Nations.”
The new resolution adopted by
the subcommittee, headed by Rep.
Don Bonker(D-Wash.), is the only
measure now in the House since
Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), who
had sponsored a resolution earlier,
withdrew his formulation in
support of the one sponsored by
Reps. Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.),
Jonathan Bingham (D-N.Y.),
Benjamin Rosenthal (D-N.Y.),
William Broomfield (R-Mich.),
Clay Shaw (R-Fla.) and Charles
Wilson (D -Texas).
Among the 120 co-sponsors of
the new House resolution are five
from Georgia: Reps. Bo Ginn,
Elliott Levitas, Billy Evans and
Doug Barnard, all Democrats, and
Newt Gingrich, Republican. On
the Lantos measure, Levitas and
Gingrich also were co-sponsors,
along with Wyche Fowler,
Democrat.
The full committee will consider
the resolution next Tuesday, after
which it will go to the floor for
House consideration.
In a statement issued from his
Washington office, Ginn said,
“ The United Nations has become a
favorite forum for anti-democratic
nations who seek to bully Israel
with a stream of lies. More
recently, there are ominous
indications that some nations in
the General Assembly are moving
toward an effort to expel Israel in
violation of the charter. 1 believe it
is imperative that we move now to
block any such move.”

The resolution is identical to the
measure adopted by the Senate on
April 14 except that it modifies the
Senate resolution to the extent that
it applies only to Israel. The Senate
resolution includes “Israel or any
