NEW YORK—Leonard Peikoff, the Objectivist philosopher who
inherited the mantle of intellectual leadership when Ayn Rand died Hist
March, is fearful that America is marching to the same drumbeat to
which Germany marched in the time of the Nazis.
“Philosophy is what moves the world,” he maintains. And he sees the
same philosophy that underlined German thought now being taught in
1U.S. universities.
What are the ideas that brought Hitler to
power? He says they were unreason and self-
sacrifice.
“The first is the rejection of logic. It is
relying on intuition, instinct, emotion. This
is taught in our colleges.
“The second is that it’s wrong to pursue
your own happiness. You are a pawn of the
community so you should serve others.”
He said that was Hitler’s mystic cult of the
'20s. Unreason and self-sacrifice causes cults
like the Moonies to flourish. They’re looking
for a leader who tells them, “Don’t think!
Obey!"
Tim Boxer Dr. Peikoff is the author of a book setting
forth his fears that America may be heading for fascism...or worse. The
explosive volume is titled “The Ominous Parallels,” published by Stein &
Day. He outlines the curious similarities of current American intellectual
undercurrents and the early Nazi philosophy.
A native of my shtetl, Winnipeg, Peikoff is an ardent admirer of Israel.
“I’m not a professional Jew," he says, “but strongly support Israel’s
pursuit of the PLO in Lebanon.
“It’s a disgrace what the Reagan administration is doing to stop the
Israelis from cleaning out the PLO in Lebanon. If terrorists were sitting in
Canada, bombing American border towns, we’d have every right to
pursue them across the border. It’s appalling and scandalous how
Washington reacted."
With his book. Dr Peikoff is trying to use philosophy to change the
world. "Be an individual," he advocates. “Use your own mind and pursue
your own happiness."

ALAN KING, who hasn’t been seen on Broadway in 15 years, gave
•uch m fine performance at an American Jewhh Congmt dinner aTtfie
Pierre Hotel that 1 wouldn’t be surprised to see him back on the boards
shortly. The guests of honor at the dinner, you see, were the heads of the
Shubert organization—Bernard Jacobs and Geraod Schoenfeld.
Alan told us how he was raised in the Jewish manner: Whenever he
calls his parents in Florida, his mother chides him, “You never call." His
father is 91, his mother, 85.
“Where are you going?" she asked. “I’m paying tribute to the
Shuberts,” her son answered. “My favorite composer,” she said
approvingly.
It’s very important to be able to laugh, Alan said. “The biggest
contribution the Jews made to civilization was to laugh at adversity. My
Hebrew, name, Yitzhak, means to laugh "
For example, his father went for an operation. He looked at the
surgeon and declared, “Hey, butcher! You do a good job or you'll be in
my son's act!"
Alan's family threw a 65th wedding anniversary celebration for the
parents. He asked what kept them together so many years. “Hate kept us
together,” the father replied. “We wouldn’t die. We wouldn’t give the
other the satisfaction.”
When his father became deaf, he shrugged it off: “What’s the
difference? I've heard everything 1 want to hear."
The mother went to sleep, and Alan walked to the bar and yelled
“What’ll you have to drink, Pop?" His father said, “Why are you
shouting?" “I realized,” Alan said, “the minute my mother goes to sleep,
he hears."
