Scholarships given
by Pioneer Women
Scholarships for 770 women
attending more than 50
institutions of higher education in
Israel were recently awarded by the
Perpetual Scholarship Fund of
Pioneer Women/Na’amat, the
Women’s Labor Zionist
Organization of America. The
scholarships cover full tuition for a
one-year period.
The recipients, among whom
were 14 Arab and Druze women,
came from 97 towns, 56 moshavim
and 10 village* throughout Urael
(Kibbutzim support their own
members in higher education).
Scholarship fund coordinator
Dita Blumenthal reported that 28
percent of the winners were
majoring in teaching and
education, 10 percent in
engineering and technology, five
percent in agriculture, and almost
three percent each in medicine and
in mathematics and physics.
In choosing among the
applicants, the scholarship judges
award extra points to women who
plan to enter male-dominated
fields and to older women who are
resuming their studies.
One scholarship winner, a
student of animal husbandry at the
Hebrew University agricultural
school, said: \
“I have nine brothers and
sisters.... My father works as a
school janitor; my mother is a
housewife. Despite the harsh
environment and poverty of our
neighborhood, despite our
economic straits and the urgency
of each child contributing to the
family income, our parents have
encouraged us all to continue our
studies past the high-school level."
She concluded: “How have we
managed? With the support of
scholarships. Let no person say
that it is not possible to study in
Israel because of lack of funds."
