daughter, Meagan Risa, on Oct.
22. Grandparents are Eleanor and

Irving Hoffman, and Marie
Jacobstein, all of Atlanta, and the

Mr. and Mrs. John M. Mehler ol

Brian was given the Hebrew
name Herschel Shmuel in memory
of his great-grandfather, Hermann
Lustgarten and uncle, Samuel
Linder. Dr. Mark Safra performed

Sherri and Moe Soriano of
Atlanta announce the birth of a
daughter, Lauren Beth, on Oct. 28
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Soriano and Mr and Mrs.
Sanford Orkin. Great-grandparents
are Mrs. B. H. (Juana) Habib and
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Hartman, all
of Atlanta.
Bess Taffel of Atlanta was
awarded the V A.V.S. tiophy at
the annual National Jewish War
Veterans Post and Auxiliary
convention of the U.S.A.. held
recently in Atlanta.
Mrs. Taffel was awarded the
trophy for her outstanding
volunteer service at the Atlanta
Veteran's Administration
Medical Center. This is the first
time an individual has been
given the honor In the past, it
has always gone to a
department.
l^ast year, she was awarded the
V.A.V.S, plaque, again a first
for an individual, because the
plaque has gone to an auxiliary
in the past

Mr. and Mrs. Myer Rubin of
Atlanta celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary on Dec. 3.
Mrs. Rubin is the former I-akic
Pollock of Atlanta.
A dinner party was given in their
honor by their children, Mr and
Mrs. Ralph Kahn of Atlanta, Dr.
and Mrs. Larry A. Cohen of
Athens and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie A
Rubin of Clearwater. Fla. The
Rubins have 10 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. Approxi
mately 100 guests were present to
congratulate the couple.
Dick Isenberg of Atlanta has
been elected president of the
Sandy Springs Chamber of
Commerce for 1984. He is a
former member of the board of
trustees and a former vice
president of Temple Sinai.
As president of the Chamber
of Commerce, he will direct
that organization’s business
and civic activities for its 250
members.
He is the owner of Isenberg
Insurance Services.
Ms. Sherri Lynn Bassner was
among the 12 Goucher College
students elected this year to Phi
Beta Kappa
A chemistry major, Ms. Bassner
is the daughter of Terry and Ken
Bassner of Atlanta. She is a
graduate of Briarcliff High School

Charles S. Ackerman of
Atlanta, international real estate
developer and president of
Ackerman and Co., was recently
elected a fellow of Brandeis
University by the board of trustees.
In 1982, Brandeis University
presented him with its
Distinguished Community Service
Award Ackerman is currently a
member of the board of visitors at
Oglethorpe University, a trustee of
the Atlanta Zoological Society,
chairman of the long range
planning committee of thc-AjIanta
Real Estate Board and member of
the board of directors of the
Georgia World Congress Institute.
The Bar Mitzva of Jeffrey
Dudovitz of Atlanta will take
place on Thursday, Dec. 22, at
the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
Jeffrey is the son of Renee
and David Dudovitz. He is the
grandson of Herbert and Pearl
Harris of Evergreen, Colo., and
Louis and Faye Dudovitz of
Jerusalem.
Jeffrey and his parents are
members of Temple Sinai.
Mary Travers, of the folksinging trio, Peter, Paul and Mary,
was recently presented with a national honorary life membership in
Pioneer Women/Na’amat.
A strong supporter of Soviet Jewry, Ms. Travers was said to
typify the “kind of concerned, outspoken woman” who is the part
of the Pioneer Women organization.
Shulamit Shamir, wife of Israeli president Yitzhak Shamir,
(right) presents a gift to Helen Jackson, founding co-chairman of
Congressional Wives for Soviet Jewry.
The women met during the recent meeting coordinated by the
National Council of Soviet Jewry’s Washington ofTice. Mrs.
Shamir participated in a discussion on the situation facing Soviet
Jews and expressed hope that the upcoming international
parliamentary spouses conference on Soviet Jewry, to be held in
April, would increase public awareness of the issue.
Al Baron, a member of the JNF board, presents a plaque for a
garden of trees planted in Israel in memory of his mother, Sylvia
Simkover, to his wife, Rita. The trees were planted in the Women's
Forest in the Galilee.
