NEW YORK —Mary Soreanu, the beautiful actress, says she comes
from Braila, Rumania, "a port on the Danube famous for good cheese
and pretty girls."
But it’s not cheesecake she displays at Town Hall, but rather a
delicious talent for the Yiddish stage as she stars in "The Jewish Gypsy.”
The show, with English narration, is about a gypsy girl who mixes with a
religious Jewish family.
“I grew up on the edge of town near the
gypsies,” Mary said over lunch at La
Difference.
“The gypsies were persecuted by the
Nazis like the Jews. And they saved many
Jewish lives during the war ”
After the war, her father was imprisoned
for four years for Zionism They left for
Israel in 1965.
She performed in Israel in her native
language until a producer got her to switch
to Yiddish. She became a hit. She came to
the United States to do "The Girl from Tel
Aviv” in 1978 and stayed to do a Yiddish
play every year.
"Yiddish theater in Israel is disappearing," Mary said. "In the United
States it’s flourishing, thanks to Isaac Bashevis Singer We are a
continuation of the tradition of 2nd Avenue."

Canada after the first of the year. It’s in Chinese with English subtitles.

Angeles home. “It’s about a woman’s memories of her childhood in
Beijing.”
While in China, Deborah had discussions about producing a Chinese
film. There was also talk about having her star in a Chinese production.
She won’t have to learn the language—she’ll play an American.
"1 was struck by the closeness of the family in China,” Deborah said
about her impressions of the people.
“They have such respect for their elders. It’s the same in the Jewish
tradition ”

The five are: Kerim Khalaf,
former mayor of Ramallah who
lost a foot in a car-bombing
three years ago; Mustafa
Natshe, ousted by the Israelis
last summer as mayor of
Hebron; Paul Ajlouni,
