HE CENTER'S
Our Invisible Programs
One of our staff recently was speaking to a community
group about AJCC services and was surprised to learn
that those in attendance knew so little about the whole
variety of programs offered by this agency. She asked me if
! could just mention a few of them in my column. So here
goes.
Did you know. . .
. . . that we have a new Junior High program which
was launched as Picadilly Lounge on Nov. 30 when over 50
teenagers from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades
enjoyed an evening of dancing and good food at Zaban.
The phones are still ringing off the hook calling for “more,
more;”
. . . that we pick up over 100 Senior Adults at their
homes from all over Atlanta who have their daily hot
lunch and activities at the Peachtree facility. For these
people the Center’s program has kept them alive and happy;
. . . that we now have three daytime art classes for
adults at Peachtree and are beginning a new Israeli dance
class;
. . . that this fall over 150 adults participated in our
Tuesday Institute of Adult Enrichment program and
beginning in January we are offering 10 new activities from
mahjongg to Psychology of Weight Control in conjunction
with The Temple.
• . . that twice a month we host a Lunch-and-Learn
program with a local rabbi where dozens of people delve
into a delicious meal at the same time they delve into
Torah study;
. . . that we already have eight teenagers signed up
for our new Kesher summer trip to Israel which includes
visits to Jewish communities in Europe;
. . . that our Very Important People program serves
handicapped young adults with an excellent Jewish social
experience which they and their parents feel is one of the
most important enriching experiences of their lives;
. . . and on and on. It’s so frustrating to hear that no
matter how hard we try to communicate with our Centerline
or with the Center-Spot and other public relations
announcements that so many know so little about what
we do for this community. We will just have to try harder.
Another Yiddish Movie at the Center
The AJCC will present its fourth in a series of Jewish
movies, “MOLLY,” starring Gertrude Berg and a cast of
delightful characters. Following 15 years of successful
radio broadcasts, Gertrude Berg, in her feature film debut,
brought to the screen her portrayal of Molly Goldberg,
the stereotypical Jewish matriach. “Molly” is a portrait of
the Jewish community as a good-natured ethnic caricature.
I he movie will be shown at the Peachtree building on
Monday night, Dec. 16, at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $2 in advance
and $3 at the door. Call Chana Shapiro for information,
875-7881.
Special Events at the Center
Starting in January our Special Events Department
will be working with members of the Center who wish to
hold private parties at either of our buildings. We will be

able to help our members with birthday parties, swim
parties, Sweet Sixteen parties and other occasions that
necessitate a large room, a central location or special
equipment. We have become very good at giving parties.
Once again, call Chana Shapiro for more information,
875-7881.
Li’l Abner’s Coming
Our teenagers constantly amaze us. We have some
very talented young men and women, and nurtured by
the proper direction, fantastic things happen. One of those
fantastic things was the AJCC/BBYO production of
‘’Charlie Brown” which is just winding up at Peachtree.
Without skipping a beat they’re back in production
again, this time with “Li’l Abner.” Auditions are Dec. 15,
16 and 17. Call Beverly Shmerling, 875-7881, for more
information.
Our Kids Art Work on Display
The new Horizon Gallery, an original art gallery, is
currently exhibiting art work done by children and young
teenagers. W'ork from the Mid-Town Experience In The
Arts summer program and ceramics from our AJCC
children’s department are featured. The gallery is located
at ! 8 West Peachtree Place, off of West Peachtree Road.
Video Equipment Needed
The Cultural Arts and Special Events Departments of
the Center need a video camera to record special
programs and enhance member participation in our
activities. If you have a video camera or other video
equipment in good working order, please contact Chana
Shapiro or Beverly Shmerling at 875-7881.
