Indians make Jewish lawyer
honorary member of the tribe
by Ben Gallob
JTA
A 33-year-old Portland Jewish
lawyer, who for I0 years has been
defending the legal rights of American
Indians, has been made an honorary
member of the Celilo-Wyam tribe.
In a four-hour ceremony. Jack
Schwartz became the first white
ever to be adopted by the Columbia
River tribe, according to the Portland
Jewish Review.
The tribe gave him a new name,
Shoo’E-Shy-N-SH, translated into
English as “steelhead.” His adoptive
father, Chief Howard Jim, stood
beside him through the long morning
of speeches. His natural parents,
Max and Grace Schwartz, flew in

Schwartz said the Indians ol the
Columbia River are struggling to
preserve their society against
tremendous pressure from govern
ment and other sources. Doing his
best to preserve their rights is
Schwartz. He said that he believed
that, unfortunately, the American
Indians have as little clout as did
the Russian Jews of the 19th century.
The river and its fish are sacred to
Indian religion and culture but
they are also a source of income for
white fishermen.
In the 1930s, the construction of
Bonneville Dam flooded 39 Indian
villages. Twenty years later, the
Dalles Dam destroyed Celilo Falls,
which Schwartz said was the religious
center of the Columbia River tribes,
comparable to what Jerusalem is
to Jews.
In recent years, increasing numbers
of Indians have been indicted for
poaching salmon and threatened
with five-year prison terms for that
“offense.” Last spring, Schwartz
said, his adoptive father was arrested
and charged with “poaching."
Schwartz said it was the fight of

the powerless to maintain inde
pendence that brought him into
legal battle on the side of the
Indians. He said that in his 10
years as a lawyer he has represented
I ndians in several states, contending
he has never lost a major case in
such legal battles. He said he picked
his clients carefully, commenting
that, for an attorney, “you are who
you represent.” He said he chooses
to represent only those he feels are
“morally right.”
Schwartz said he felt there was
considerable similarity between the
Jewish and Indian cultures, parti
cularly in the emphasis each group
puts on family, historical and
generational ties. He said he also
believes both cultures are alike in
the way its members have been
treated by the majority in the lands
they live in.
Because of persecution, Schwartz’
grandparents left Russia in the
early 20th century and moved on
to live in the anti-Semitism of
Poland before migrating to the
United States. Schwartz also believes
that the Indians, like his Jewish
ancestors, have turned inward in
response to the hostility which
surrounds them.
“If I were living 50 to 60 years
ago,” he said, “I’d be doing the
same work, only my clients would
be Jewish.” He expressed the view
that the handful of other attorneys
in the United States who work with
Indians also are Jewish.
During the salmon feast, at which
Schwartz, became a symbolic son
of Chief Howard Jim, Schwartz
spoke on the strength and will of
the Jewish community, and the
goodness of their values of family
and self-determination. Schwartz
also talked about his Jewish heritage
and the Jewish similarities to Indian
culture.
