Torah Day School benefit
will feature Marc Weiner
Special to [he Southern Israelite
Torah Day School, Atlanta’s
newest Jewish elementary school,
will present “A Comedy Concert"
featuring Marc Weiner and the
Weinerettes at 8 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 4, at the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center on Peachtree.
Weiner and his “friends” have
appeared on “Saturday Night Live,”
“Comedy Tonight,” “Evening at
the Improv” and “Sesame Street.”
They have also been featured in
Atlanta at the Punch Line and
local college campuses.
Weiner climbed to comedic heights
via the steps of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. There, his early
free performances of zaniness were
discovered, and he quickly entered
the world of New York’s comedy
clubs: The Improvisation, Catch a
Rising Star, and the Comic Strip.
Successful professionally, he
nevertheless felt a void in his life.
“There was something missing in
my life,” he said. “I did ‘Saturday
Night Live’ and I still felt empty.”
He discovered what he needed
when he walked into Lincoln Square
Marc Weiner
Synagogue in New York City. “It
was as if I had come home,” he said
of his first service. “It just felt so
comforting, as if I was in the arms
of my father.”
What moved him, he said, was
the Orthodox synagogue’s dedication
to keeping the Shabbat as a day of
rest, a practice he adopted at
considerable cost to his ability to
get nightclub bookings. “Once I
discovered Shabbat, and accepting
what G-d wanted me to do, I
started feeling, yes, I have a purpose

Jewish couple returns
to German hometown
Last month, Atlantans Irma Wolffs
and her husband Benno returned
to the German town of her childhood.
Fifteen former Jewish residents of
Ahlen in W'estphalia had accepted
an invitation to participate in the
dedication of a statue the town was
erecting in memory of local victims
of the Holocaust.
The dedication was timed to
coincide with “Krystallnacht, Nov.
10, 1938, the night of destruction
of Germany’s synagogues.
The trips for the former residents
were funded by contributions from
the present citizens of Ahlen, which
has about 50,000 residents.
Activities involving the visitors
continued throughout the week,
culminating with the unveiling of
the sculpture.
In addition to the people of
Ahlen and the Jewish former resi
dents, the dedication was attended
by Israel’s ambassador to Germany,
Itzchak Ben-Ari; the district rabbi,
Emil Davidovic from Dortmund;
the mayor of Ahlen and the regional
minister of justice.
Mrs. Wolffs, despite earlier reser
vations about making the trip, called
the observance “Germany’s current
attempt to reconcile itself with world
Jewry.” Benno Wolffs noted that
the memorial was located in such a
prominent location in the town
that it would be a constant reminder
to the people.

on this earth and a meaning. My
purpose is to be a good person and
a learned Jew.”
Putting into practice the concept
of learning in order to teach, Weiner
tours college campuses and speaks
to Jewish students. His message is
very simple: one can be successful
in a demanding career such as
show business, while observing the
tenets of Judaism.
How successful is he? “Come
and judge for yourself,” advise
Marsha Spector and Shonni
Schwartz, co-chairmen of the event.
General admission tickets are
available for $ 15; seniors and students
tickets are $10. Refreshments are
included in the cost of the ticket.
Special ticket categories are available
for reserved front seating and a
buffet reception in honor of Weiner
after the show.
Tickets can be purchased at
