Visit Israel This Summer
Atlanta is extremely fortunate to have Itzhak Sordo,
an Israel shaliach, on the staff of the AJCC. A shaliach is
literally a “messenger,” and emissary from Israel who will
work two or three years in the United States as an
unofficial ambassador.
His responsibilities include bringing the culture and
tradition of Israel to both the Jewish and gentile communi
ties, through programming at the Center, by being
available to speak to various groups, and by his daily
contact with dozens of people. Itzhak is available to assist
people who would like more information about trips to
Israel. He has a wealth of materia! on dozens of Israeli
summer programs.
In this regard, the AJCC’s Israel Program Center will
conduct an Israeli Summer Program Open House on
Sunday, Jan. 19, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Peachtree
building. Itzhak is inviting high school and college age
students to take this opportunity to come and see films on
Israel and talk to participants of many of these programs.
There will be information on sports and Kibbutz programs,
scholarships and travel particulars. Israeli food will be
served. For more information call Itzhak Sordo, director
of Israel Program Center, 875-7881.
New Fitness Program at Zaban
With the new year upon us it’s time for New Year
resolutions. One of the most important should be “I will
set up a regular fitness and exercise routine.” Much has
been written about the relationship between regular
exercise, good health, positive mental attitude and long
life. Certainly the AJCC has long been committed to
providing quality exercise programs and has recently
opened up a beautiful Fitness Center at the Peachtree
building.
Now the AJCC takes another giant step forward by
hiring Debbie May, a fitness consultant to major
corporations, to conduct an Aerobics and Fitness Program
at the Zaban Branch. In order to help our members take
the first step toward regular exercise the Center will be
offering free classes during the month of January. These
classes will be held on Monday-Friday at 9:15 a.m. and
on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Aeorbics Dance program features 45 minutes of
continuous action, choreographed to popular music. The
exercise routines combines aerobics for the cardio
vascular system and calisthenics for strengthening and
toning the muscles.
Debbie May has served as consultant to the Estee
Lauder Company, Pillsbury, and Armour-Dial, has
advised the U.S. Cheerleaders Association and has been a
principal choreographer for several aerobics exercise
record albums.
News from the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, Inc.
The program begins on Jan. 1 5 and is available only
to AJCC members.
In another development, this spring a new Fitness
Center, similar to the Peachtree facility, will open at the
Zaban branch. The Fitness Center will include the latest
Nautilus and other fitness equipment and will be staffed
by outstanding exercise physiologists, who will provide
individualized exercise and fitness prescriptions for the
Fitness Center members.
For more information on this fitness program and the
free January offer call Gary Cohen, Zaban Branch health
and Physical Education director, 396-3250.
Congratulations to Bill Swift
Bill Swift, the AJCC tennis pro, has completed
Dennis Vandemeer’s one-week Tennis University Program
where he learned new tennis teaching techniques. At the
end of the week-long course, Bill passed a certification
test for the U.S. Tennis Professional Registry with the
highest possible marks. Bill is now certified by the only
two organizations that recognize tennis professionals.
Please call Bill Swift if you are interested in enrolling
your child in the Spring ALTA for boys 12 and 14 or girls
12, 14 or 18. bill can be reached at 378-4023. This
program is available for Center members only.
Senior Adults Need Your Assistance
We ask the cooperation of everyone using the Peachtree
Building during the morning hours so that, if possible,
they park their cars at the far end of the parking lot and
leave the spots closer to the building for our Senior
Citizens. Many of them have complained that by the time
they get here in the mid-morning, they must walk from
the tennis court area to the auditorium for their hot
lunch. Since many of them have difficulty in walking,
your cooperation in this matter might make life much
easier for them.
