Rabbi Emanuel Feldman
since 1952, currently serves as vice
president of the Beth Din of America.
An author of over 50 published
articles in magazines and numerous
English-Jewish periodicals, Rabbi
Feldman serves as book editor of
Tradition magazine. His most recent
book is “Jewish Law as Theology.”
“The retreat, open to the entire
Jewish community, allows partici
pants an opportunity to learn not
only in the formal sessions but
beyond those sessions as well,”
Rabbi Avraham Feuer
stated Dr. Mark Fisher, chairman
of the retreat. “In fact,” the retreat
chairman added, “it has become a
tradition to keep the rabbis up,
long after midnight and after the
entertainment of Saturday night,
to expand upon the subject matter
and to ask all those questions that
one still has on his or her mind
which go beyond the topic of the
retreat.”

Yoss, New. c hahad of (ieorg.a indication t hat this piece of business
It is late Friday afternoon. John
sees his Jewish friend closing his
store or office to leave, in the
middle of all his business activities.
“What’s the rush?” asks John. “There
are still quite a number of hours
left till Sunday.”
I he Jew replies, “What is Sunday
to me? To me Friday night signals
Shabbat has come, peace has come.”
“But w hat of your business? You
are in the middle of an important
transaction?”
“There is a law in our Torah-
C ode, the Shulchan Aruch, that
when Shabbat comes you must
regard all your work as done. All
the work or business which belongs
to me is completely done. It’s an
“either-or” situation. If it is destined
and necessary for me to earn a
certain amount of money this
week—then 1 will earn it, either on
briday afternoon before candle
lighting time, or on Sunday, or
Saturday night after Havdalah, after
Shabbat. If I do not end up earning
was not meant for me; it was not
my money; it is therefore much
better that I should have nothing
to do with it.”
Torah and mitzvot were given
for our own good. Not only for our
benefit in the World To Come, the
spiritual hereafter, but also for our
good in this world. Ultimately, the
Almighty wants that we should
“have it good” in this physical
world, in eating, drinking and
sleeping, nachas from children, a
pleasant place of habitation, good
clothing, etc. ... But we must
always remember the mission, the
purpose and the goal of our physical
possessions.
