younger than 18, and the adjustment
is relatively fast. Nearly 3,000 are
in Youth Aliyah frameworks, funded
through UJ A/ Federation Campaigns,
with the remaining 5,000 children
in day schools. The plan for the
coming year is to close separate
classes and fully integrate Ethiopian
youngsters into the schools. Another
129 Ethiopian Jewish students are
enrolled at Israeli universities and
technical colleges.
For the community’s working-
age adults, on-the-job training
programs have been is operation
since last February. Factories, hotels
and chain stores throughout the
country are employing hundreds
of Ethiopian Jews for a shortened
working day, and allowing them
time for study after work. Within
two years, 1,580 Ethiopian Jews—
or half the working-age community—
will have passed through the program.
“It’s important forthe Ethiopian
immigrants to get jobs as soon as
possible,” says a Jewish Agency
official. “It’s psychologically
healthier, and unemployment in
Israel will get worse before it gets
better. So it’s vital that Ethiopian
Jews have employment before the
crisis more fully hits.”

housing and integration into the

What a Jewish Agency social worker
describes as “the worst problem,”
however, is less easily addressed.
In over a third of all Ethiopian
Jewish families in Israel, one parent
it is usually the father—is absent.
Often he is dead, or trapped in
Ethiopia; sometimes the couple was
divorced. Economically and psycho
logically, this puts the family under
pressure.
Contact is maintained between
divided families. Almost every
Ethiopian Jew in Israel still has
close relatives in Ethiopia, and
letters are regularly exchanged.
“The situation in Ethiopia is
very bad.” says the social worker.
“But when you look back from the
freedom of the Jewish state and a
three-room apartment with a refri
gerator and running water, to the
life you knew in an Ethiopian
village, it looks even worse.”
If Israel’s Ethiopian Jews have
traveled far beyond the life they
left a year ago, there is still a long
road ahead. Israel estimates that
the full absorption ofthecommunity
will take several years and ultimately
cost $300 million, including the
$125 million budgeted for the first
phase of absorption. Half of the
$ 125 million was raised from Ameri
can Jews through Operation Moses,
but more funds are needed to make
this dramatic aliyah successful.

Tuesday.
Yossi Sarid, of the leftist Civil
Rights Movement (CRM) accused
Shilansky of announcing “in a
planned, provocative manner” that
Jews would pray on the Temple
Mount. Shilansky denied he made
any such announcement. He said
Waldman’s praying was a spon
taneous act. Other rightwingers
accused the CRM of inciting the
mob by shouting “provocation.”
Knesset Speaker Shlomo Hillel,
a Laborite, criticized both the right-
wing extremists in the Knesset and
the Moslem militants. He said there
was no question of Israel’s sovereignty
overtheTemple Mount and expressed
hope that a dialogue can be re
established between Israelis and
Moslems.

Hillel, who had taken a dim view
of Shilansky’s visits to the site but
was unable to prevent them, toured
the Temple Mount Monday with
Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek.
They met with members of the
Moslem Supreme Council, headed
by Mufti Sa’ad A-Din-Alami.
Their visit was not covered by
the media because of the presence
of cameras near the Islamic shrines
was partly responsible for last week’s
incident.
Hillel and Kollek chastised the
Moslem clerics for incitement last
week. The M uezzin, who announces
the hours of prayer to the faithful,
used the public address system to
summon a mob to defend the holy
places against an “invasion by Jews."
Kollek said the Mufti agreed that
was wrong.
He and Hillel spoke to reporters
afterwards. The Knesset speaker
dismissed complaints by Jewish
activists that the Moslem authorities
were allowing illegal construction.
He said all he saw was reconstruction
of certain buildings badly in need
of it, and this he welcomed.
