Torah thoughts
The crutches
Adapted from the works of Rabbi Menachem M.
Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, by Rabbi
Yossi New, Chabad of Georgia
Question to the Thought for the
Week: In your last issue you stated
morality was Divine Authority.
You implied very clearly that being
observant of Torah and mitzvot
was the true basis for ethical con
duct. Well, I live among observant,
Orthodox Jews, and I can assure
you that I have found deficiencies
in their ethical conduct. How can
you explain this?
Although such arguments are
common, and appear to be damag
ing, they can be refuted by an
analogy:
You walk down the street and
see a man on crutches leaving a
doctor’s office. You might think
that the doctor was incompetent
— the patient went to visit him.
paid a substantial fee, followed the
doctor’s instructions perfectly, and
took all the prescribed treatments
and medicines. Still he must use
crutches — in fact, he cannot take
a step without them. But your
opinion will change if you are told
that prior to visiting the doctor, the
patient was hopelessly crippled
and paralyzed. Now, at least,
the doctor has been able to rehabil
itate him to the extent that he can
move under his own power. It may
further be pointed out that he can
not only move and walk (albeit
with crutches) but that he is mak
ing significant progress. Hopefully
he will continue to improve and
will ultimately be able to discard
the crutches, if only he continues to
follow the doctor’s advice . . .
By the same token, all people
have certain built-in attributes
from birth. Some are desirable and
others are weaknesses. By means
Rabbi Schneerson
of proper rehabilitation, through
the influence of good teachers, and
particularly through self-learning
programs (properly carried out)
the weaknesses and handicaps can
be diminished and overcome.
Since this rehabilitation or therapy
program is a lifetime task, it is little
surprise that a stranger encounter
ing a man during the course of his
therapy will still observe some of
the remaining weaknesses. But the
weakness should not be ascribed to
the treatment or to the doctor’s
advice. On the contrary, the person
has probably made substantial im
provement on his past condition
and hopefully if he continues to
follow the “doctor’s” advice he will
also be able to discard the crutches
and will eventually become com
pletely cured.
Empire Kosher strikes back
Just two weeks after the disas
trous fire that caused approximate
ly $25 million in damage at its
Mifflingtown, Pa., poultry process
ing plant, Empire Kosher Poultry
has released additional informa
tion about current production and
rebuilding plans.
Murray L. Katz, president of
Empire Kosher, has reported the
following:
Fresh chickens are available. All
current orders are being filled and
there is no shortage of fresh poul
try.
Turkey processing resumed at
Empire’s Mifflintown plant on Sun
day, Feb. 9, with delivery of tur
keys to market resuming at the
same time.
Most cooked products (barbe
cue chickens, hot dogs, soups, chick
en nuggets, fried chicken, etc.) are
being made daily. Very few short
ages of these products are ex
pected.
Retail packaged fresh-frozen pro
ducts (legs, wings, breasts, cut-up,
cornish, etc.) are being produced
and shipped. Most supply lines are
being filled currently and by the
end of February, 90 to 100 percent
of orders will be filled.
Empire’s line of non-poultry
items has not been affected and
supplies have not been interrupted.
He said, “Empire has become
world renowned for its high qua
lity chicken, turkey and food pro
ducts and even though we are now
working to maintain as high a level
of production as possible, we want
to assure our customers that we
will never compromise our com
mitment to the highest possible
quality.”
Shortly after the Jan. 26 fire,
Empire officials announced their
intention to rebuild the plant and
replace it with a larger, more mod
ern processing facility.
Demolition and clean-up of the
fire damaged areas began Feb. 3
and is expected to be completed
within two to three weeks.
Construction of the new plant
is scheduled to begin in early
March, with most of the work
scheduled to be completed by July.
Katz also emphasized that Em
pire expects no problems in being
able to fill all orders for fresh, fro
zen and cooked items for the Pas-
over Holidays.
