Atlanta teens reap rewards
in Yehud exchange program
Editor's note: Gwen Kaminsky
and Julie Buchwald, who parti
cipated in the 19X5 Atlanta- Yehud
Exchange Program, wrote the
following article about their
experiences.
There are many programs that a
Jewish teenager might consider
when thinking about traveling to
Israel. While many programs
provide unique experiences for
young adults, the Atlanta-Yehud
exchange is, in our opinion, the
greatest and most rewarding
experience.
As past participants, we can
personally vouch for the benefits
of this truly unique program.
Because the number of persons
participating on the trip to Israel is
limited to a dozen, the bonds
between the participants become
strong and enduring.
Perhaps the greatest joy we
received from this exchange
program is the new-found friend
ships and hospitality of the Yehud
citizens. Nothing is more per
sonally satisfying than being
accepted as a member of an
adopted family. Each participant
is housed by two families for
approximately three weeks each.
All host families have teenagers our
age and this enabled us to live as
Israeli youth. Some of our fondest
memories are going for ice cream
in “downtown" Yehud and
heading into Tel Aviv for
shopping, a movie, or our personal
favorite the beach.
In a larger program, one is
hustled from one place to the next,
constantly liv ing out of a suitcase.
The Yehud homes are a base for the
four or five day trips one may take

Yehud is Camaraderie
to the Galilee, Eilat, Jerusalem, or
a kibbutz. While cliques easily
form in those larger programs, on
the Yehud program everyone
seems to accept and respect each
other. Also, to come home to a
freshly prepared meal and the
comforts of “family” members is a
bonus that no other program can
provide.
Like most programs, we visited
the Western Wall, Masada, the
Dead Sea and the Banyas. But on
the Yehud exchange program, the
Israeli hosts participated with us,
allowing us to experience the
reactions of both tourists and
Israeli citizens toward the country
of Israel.

A few activities were especially
memorable. We spent the Fourth
of July bagging bananas at
Kibbutz. Metzer. There are plans
to repeat this four-day program
that provided us with a different
look at Israeli living. In fact, the
kibbutzniks seemed to respect and
appreciate our hard work. In
addition, we participated in an
archaeological dig at the Citadel in
the Old City of Jerusalem. In Eilat,
we climbed Masada in the wee
hours of the morning to see the
beautiful sun rise over the Dead
Sea. We met people from all over
the world including a Jewish youth
group from England with whom we
shared a midnight bonfire on the
beaches of Eilat.
Another interesting aspect of
this program is the Yehud
teenagers that come to Atlanta.
Atlanta families host these
teenagers in a manner similar to our
experiences in Yehud. In order for
this program to be such a
wonderful success we must con
tinue to send Atlanta’s Jewish
teenagers to our sister city of
Yehud. We have continued to
maintain our friendships with the
Israelis through numerous letters
and special phone calls.
Next year we will be attending
college and our best wishes and
hopes for the program will
continue. We grew a great deal
.from our Israeli experiences and
would love to share them with
others interested in such a
program. Israel now has a personal
meaning to us. We are betteraware
of the importance of the bond
between the Jews of America and
the people of Israel. In conclusion,
we stress the necessity but mostly
the personal rewards, of visiting
Israel—especially as a teenager.
The Yehud exchange greatly
surpassed our expectations and we
are positive that it will be satisfying
for this year’s participants.
