Passover seders embody
‘full Jewish life’ at Emory
Special to I he Southern Israelite
Well over a hundred Emory stu-
dentsand Atlanta area community
members celebrated Passover at
two seders the first night of the
holiday in Cox Hall, and another
30 attended a seder in Rabbi Sha
piro’s home the second night.
Both traditional and Reform
seders were held the first night, co
sponsored by Hillel and by the
Reform Jewish Students Commit
tee. Hillel Rabbi Zvi Shapiro con
ducted the traditional seder on the
first night. The food was pre
pared in the Hillel House, although
Hr. Aaron Shat/man, Hillel pro
gram director, arranged for potato
kugel and sponge cake to be pre
pared in St. Louis, and flown to
Atlanta for the holidays. The supp
lier also provided about 30 kosher-
for-Passover TV dinners which
Hillel made available to Emory
students who wished to observe the
holiday, but did not have access to
kosher kitchen facilities.
“It is both fulfilling and reward
ing to be able to offer these kinds ol
services,” said Rabbi Shapiro. “We
think it is a fundamental aspect of
our role to make it possible for
students and community members
to partake of a full Jewish life.”
I)r. Shat/man prepared 120
chicken breasts for the first-night
seders. Beth Fleet of the RJSC,
working in the Hillel House ko-
shered-for-Passover by Rabbi
Shapiro, produced huge amounts
of haroset and 100 hard-boiled
eggs. Simultaneously, Shat/man
was cooking beef brisket in wine
sauce for the second night seder.
“Logistics were a real problem,”
noted Rabbi Shapiro. “Aaron was
cooking meals for 150 people in
two locations, 1 was supervising
the kashering of both the Hillel
House and the Cox Hall facilities
and coordinating arrangements
with Emory Food Service so that
food service trucks were going back
and forth between the Hillel House,
Cox Hall, and my home all day.”
According to reliable reports,
the food and the seders were out
standing. Hillel also placed a great
number of students in private homes
for seders, and lent advice and
haggadas to several groups who
conducted their own seders.
