AJF Women’s Council winds up
fruitful year, eyes new strategies
The Atlanta Jewish Federation
Women’s council marked the end
of a productive year at its closing
meeting, held at the Standard Club
las week.
The evening was also an occa
sion for honoring outgoing offic
ers: Rae Sternberg, president;
Glenda Minkin, Lynda Walkerand
Morene Seldes, vice presidents;
Billie Feinman and Laura Diner-
man, vice-presidents/Campaign;’
and Michal Hillman, secretary.
Officers installed for the 1986-87
year are Lois Blonder, president;
Eve Goldstein, Michal Hillman and
Lynda Walker, vice presidents;
Laura Dinerman and Judith Cohen,
vice presidents/ Campaign; and Sara
Zaban, secretary.
The major focus of the Women’s
Council leadership in the coming
year will be to involve more people
in the Jewish community activities.
As one component of this effort,
the Women's Council will establish
a “volunteer bank.” “Ask not what
your community can do for you,”
said Mrs. Blonder, paraphrasing
another civic minded individual,
“but, what you can do for your
community." Also installed were
the Women's Council’s new board
members.
The evening was rounded out by
informative presentations by Dr.
Joyce Starr, director of Near East
programs at the Center for Stra
tegic and International Studies.
She outlined a number of current
threats to peace in the Middle East

Torah
thoughts
Don’t get lost in the crowd!
Adapted from the works ol Rabbi Menachem M
Schnecrson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, by Rabbi
Yossi New, Chabad ol Georgia
After the Exodus from Egypt
the Jews were so eager to receive
the Torah that they counted the
days remaining to that great event.
This was a prelude to the precept of
“Counting the Omer” which they
received later at Mount Sinai.
Throughout the ages the count
ing of the Omer has remained a
preparation to receiving the Torah;
when the 49 days of Sefiras Ha'O-
mer (counting the Omer) come to
an end the festival of Shavuot
(celebrating Malian Torah—the
giving of the Torah) follows im
mediately.
The connection of Sefiras
Ha’Omer with Mattan Torah finds
expression in the idea that both
stress the individual. Each person,
individually, must count the days
of the Omer period (from the second
day of Pesach to the day before
Shavuot as distinct from the com
munal counting of the seven-year
cycle and the 50 year cycle. Each
seventh year was Sh'mitia, “the
Sabbatical Year;” each 50th year
was Yuvel, “the Jubilee Year.” In
the Yovel and Sh’mitta years a
Rabbi Schneerson
number of special laws apply, and
the mitzva of counting the seven
and 50-year cycles was performed
by Bet Din (Court of Torah Law)
on behalf of all Israel. In contrast,
the Omer is counted by each per
son individually.
In similar fashion Mattan Torah
was not only a communal, collec
tive experience; the Almighty
addressed each and every individ
ual separately. “I am G-d your G-d.”
In Hebrew there are two ways of
saying “Your G-d,” the singular
mode when addressing one indi
vidual and the plural form when
addressing two or more people.
Yet, when G-d addressed the entire
Jewish nation, several million in
number, the singular form is used
“I am G-d your G-d.” To each one
of Israel individually the Almighty
gave the Torah; to each He com
manded that they study and fulfill
all 613 mitzvot; each was infused
with Divinely granted strength and
ability to fulfill the Torah.
Don’t get lost in the crowd.
Stand up and be counted.
Each day counts; each Jew
counts; each mitzva counts.
