Special to 1 he Southern Israelite
Ruth and Oscar Borochoff were
honored recently for their years of
tireless devotion to Jewish life in
Rome and the larger Rome com
munity. The Rodeph Sholom Con
gregation and Rodeph Sholom Sis
terhood hosted a dinner on April
15 which was attended by 50 mem
bers and out-of-town guests.
I (trough the years, Ruth Boro-
choff has participated in almost
every aspect of religious life. She
was the first president of the Rodeph
Sholom Sisterhood which was or
ganized in 1935. As an active
member since then, she has held
the offices of president for three
terms, vice president and secretary.
She taught religious school for
many years. In addition, Mrs. Boro
choff was president of the Rome
chapter of Hadassah and is a life
member of Hadassah.
Her civic activities include
membership in Friends of the
l ibrary, 32-years as a Red Cross
volunteer Gray Lady, a past PTA
president, a past member of the
board of directors of the Rome
Girl Scouts, past president and 27-
year member of the Camelia Garden
Club and past secretary of the
Rome Retail Merchants’ Asso
ciation.
Ruth is a member of the Coosa
Women’s Golf Association, and
has held the offices of secretary
and treasurer. Additionally, she is
active in the Rome E1 kettes
Women’s Auxilliary, and has been
president, secretary and Aidmore
chairman. She has also been the
corresponding secretary for the state
of Georgia Elks Aidmore Aux
iliary.
Oscar Borochoff, a Rome resi
dent since 1927, was instrumental
in operations of the religious school,
serving as its superintendent from
I92K-I94X. He was chairman of the
building committee from 1935-37
when Rodeph Sholom Synagogue
was constructed. He has been a
member of the board of directors
of Rodeph Sholom Congregation
since 1927 and is currently an eme
ritus board member. He is a past
president of the congregation and

Cherokee Lodge. He has twice co
chaired the Heart Fund Drive of
Rome.
Oscar Borochoff has worked
diligently for the Elks Aidmore
Children’s Center in Conyers, serv
ing as vice president. He has been a
member of the board of directors
for 35 years, as well as executive
board member for 32 years of Elks
Aidmore Inc.
Since Ruth and Oscar Borochoff
have devoted boundless energy
to Jewish life in Rome for almost
60 years, the congregation and
sisterhood chose the contribution
of a Judaica shelf to the local
Sara Hightower Regional Library
as an appropriate tribute. It is
felt that this would honor them
both, commemorate their dedica
tion to the Rodeph Sholom com
munity, and provide information
for the benefit of the larger
Rome community for which they
have both worked so diligently,
unselfishly, and tirelessly.
