Dine, Sasser to galvanize
public support for Israel
The Atlanta community will have
an opportunity to receive inside
views on politics in the nation’s
capital when the leading pro-Israel
lobbyist and a pro-Israel senator
visit next month.
Thomas A. Dine, executive
director of the American-Israel
Public AffairsCommittee( AIPAC),
and James Sasser (D), Tennessee’s
senior senator, will brief the com
munity at a reception at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, June 1, at the Ritz-Carl-
ton/Buckhead.
“An informed, articulate pro-
lsrael community in this country is
essential for strong U.S.-Israel re
lations,” said Dine, who head the
AIPAC staff in Washington. “Citi
zens in the grassroots have a tre
mendous impact on Washington
decision-making. But to influence
policy, you have to know your
facts.”
Sen. Sasser, who speaks out fre
quently on Soviet Jewry and voted
against the sale of AWACS to
Saudi Arabia in 1981, is known as
a consistent supporter of the Jew
ish state. “Members of Congress
want to act in their constituents'
interest,” said Sasser. “But if you
don’t tell them how important Israel
is to you, they are not going to
know. You need to keep telling
them.”
Sasser and Dine will discuss the
impact of the U.S. Libyan strike on
Israel’s standing in Washington.
Sen. Sasser
recent moves in the Middle East
peace process, the drive in Con
gress to shut down PLO offices in
this country, the faltering of OPEC,
and the effects on Israel’s much-
needed foreign aid of the Gramm-
Rudman-Hollings budget-cutting
bill.
The American Israel Public
Affairs Committee is the only
American organization registered
to lobby Congress for strong U.S.-
Israel relations. In addition to lob
bying for foreign aid for Israel,
AIPAC spearheaded the lobbying
effort against this winter’s proposed
$1.9 billion sale of arms to Jordan,
and led the lobbying on behalf of
the U.S.-Israel Free Trade Agree
ment, which will allow goods to
travel duty-free between the two
countries.
AIPAC’s team of lobbyists, using
information produced by AIPAC’s
research department, regularly
discuss with congressmen legisla
tion affecting Israel. The organiza
tion sponsors a nationwide series
of workshops to involve pro-Israel
citizens in the political process.
AIPAC also maintains an active
presence on college campuses
nationwide where anti-Israel groups
attempt to influence the next gen
eration of leaders.
Some lobbyists are paid high
fees by foreign governments to
represent their interests, but AIPAC
receives no money from overseas.
Rather, it is supported by its 51,000
citizen-lobbyists, and is “the most
effective foreign policy lobbying
group in Washington,” according
to the New York Times. “Grass
roots action is the key,” said Dine.
After the meeting, Dine returns
to Washington Monday, where he
will lead the lobbying effort to
ensure adequate funds for Israel as
Congress sets the 1987 budget.
The meeting is open to the
community, but a 1986 minimum
contribution to AIPAC of $50 is
required. For more information,
call Lori Kagan at AIPAC, (202)
638-2256.
