Meanwhile, Peres has come under
pressure to allow Zamir free rein in
the case. But the prime minister
has refused to appear before the
Knesset Law Committee or to
permit Zamir to do the same. Meir
Zorea, who conducted the probe
that exonerated Mordechai, told
one Israeli newspaper: “If the
commission didn’t get all the facts,
what could I do?’’
While Peres, Shamir and the
Cabinet worried about the “senior
official" affair, they also took part
in the first visit ever of a British
prime minister.
Margaret Thatcher’s very pres
ence in Israel enveloped Israelis in
a haze of emotional, bitter memo
ries. Her historic visit here this
week was a reminder that just four
decades earlier Britain held sway
over the Jewish-Arab cauldron that
was Palestine.
But Thatcher had come to the

Among them are:
—The National Democratic Pol
icy Committee, its political arm.
The title has caused confusion
among Democrats who have some
times been led to support the group
because they thought it was a part
of the Democratic Party.
—The National Anti-Drug Coa
lition. which, ADL said, “typically
has little in the way of an actual,
practical program to fight drug
abuse” but “has merely promoted
LaRouche’s fantastic conspiracy
theories and solicited support for
the organization.”
—The Fusion Energy Founda
tion, which ostensibly promotes
new energy technologies while
striving to lure scientists, engineers
and public officials concerned with
energy problems into the LaRouche
fold.
The Washington, D.C.-based
Executive Intelligence Review, an
elaborately produced propaganda
publication with articles directed
toward the security concerns of
business and law enforcement.
According to the report, the
LaRouche cult is “conspiracy-
haunted” and believes in “a para
noid theory of history” in which,
lor example, a “degenerate oli
garchy” is “in criminal cahoots

the Jesuits, the Federal Reserve,

The study asserts that the
LaRouche operation has been
marked since 1978 by such mani
festations of anti-Semitism as:
—Singling out prominent Jews,
Jewish families and Jewish organi
zations for abuse;
—Echoing the discredited 2,000
year-old deicide charge against
Jews;
—Chargingthat prominent Jew
ish families were instrumental in
bringing Hitler to power and that
the Holocaust is a hoax;
Claiming that there is “a hard
kernel of truth” in the notorious
anti-Semitism forgery, “The Pro

Bialkin warned that “the La

of extremism, poses a threat to
democratic values and institutions
only if the American people remain
unaware of its true nature.”
Jewish state this week to bury the
past and by all accounts she suc
ceeded. By residing during her
three-day visit at Jerusalem’s King
David Hotel, where on April 22,
1946, the Irgun Jewish underground
blew up British headquarters, kil
ling 91 people, she appeared to be
saying: Let’s forget the past and
deal with the present.
That is precisely what she did.
Touring the land, chatting with
school children, dancing a Yemen
ite dance with Peres, Mrs. Thatcher
won the hearts of Israelis and no
one was more surprised than the
Israelis themselves.
Yet, even as she was winning the
nation’s hearts, she could not avoid
friction. Try as she did to keep a
low profile on political subjects,
she still managed to annoy a few
Israeli leaders with her suggestions
that West Bank Palestinian Arabs
be given better treatment. Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin was so
upset that he publicly castigated
“Europe” (a euphemism for Mrs.
Thatcher) for telling Israel what to
do about the West Bank.
He told the British leader in their
private chat that he was dead set
against elections for the West
Bankers at this state, despite Mrs.
Thatcher’s strong urgings to that
effect.
Her most vocal message had to
do with the PLO and here she had
Israelis happy and smiling. Yasir
Arafat and the PLO had let her
down by not recognizing Israel,
denouncing terror and accepting
U.N. Resolution 242. So an alter
native to the PL.O had to be found.
That was what she told Peres, the
Knesset Foreign Affairs and De
fense Committee, and a packed
news conference Tuesday morning
at the King David. That was also
presumably the message she im
parted Monday evening to West
Bank Palestinian leaders.
