Torah, the wisdom of The Crea
tor, is infinite and without limits,
"...longer than the earth and wider
than the oceans..." When G-d gave
us the Torah at Mount Sinai, he
presented it to each individual in
proportion to that individual’s
abilities; each person’s compre
hension and perception of the
essential nature of Torah is in line
with his own particular intellectual
capacity. Thus there are many dif
ferent perspectives. Some grasp
and perceive the “reward perspec
tive.” They comprehend that he
who chooses Torah literally chooses
Jew simply and literally leads a
better life, being protected by Torah
from mishaps severe and moderate.
Another individual has a differ
ent perspective. He understands
that the Torah is a source of gui
dance, showing the individual and
the community the correct path to
follow in life, and that "...her ways
are ways of pleasantness and all
her paths are peace." However,
neither of these two perspectives
(which relate only to the “revealed,”
outer aspects of Torah) give the
complete picture. The teachings of

Rabbi Sehneerson
also with the inner aspect of Torah
and reveal its inner “light” and
purpose) show how Torah is the
central link binding creation with
the Creator, based on the Zohar’s
teaching. Three are interconnected,
Israel, Torah, and The Holy One
blessed be He.
How is the Torah a connection
between the finite creation and its
infinite Creator? Very briefly, the
idea may be expressed as follows:
Creation took place Yesh Mei’ayin,
or “Ex Nihilo.” Substance was
created “in a leap” from absolute
nothingness —not from a previous
“cause” in a series of cause-and-
effect relationships leading from
Creator to created (a concept ex
plained at great length in Chabad
Chassidism). It follows that there
is no relationship or connection
between the Yesh (the physical
“something" or substance) and the
G-dly A yin (“nothingness”) that
created it—no matter whether the
Yesh is the lowest stone or the most
advanced human; for all matter
inorganic, vegetative, animal or
human—is created. Even the most
perfect human being cannot grasp
the essence of G-d with his intelli
gence, for his intelligence is itself
created. There is no relationship
whatever between the finite and
the infinite.
However, the Creator, who is
the essence of goodness, wanted to
give man the potential of breaking
out of the limitations of a created
being to ascend higher and higher,
beyond the physical world, to
achieve a state of perfect unitv wit*
his Creator. The Aimightv there
fore gave us, out of His eretc
goodness, the “Torah of lru. '
and sanctified us with Hr.
