Expansion plans are ‘unearthed’
as Temple Sinai enters 19th year
Temple Sinai climaxed its 18th
year Sunday, June l, with a ground
breaking ceremony held in con
junction with the annual congrega
tional meeting.
The symbolic turning over of the
earth in an area beside the existing
social hall marked the beginning of
the expansion phase in Temple
Sinai’s current building program.
When completed this fall, the rede
signed wing will include an enlarged
social hail and kitchen, meeting
rooms, a bride’s room, a youth
lounge and a stage area.
Already under way is extensive
renovation in the school wing,
where l 5 self-contained classrooms
are being constructed, to replace
the original open-classroom floor
plan.
New doors for the front of the
synagogue have also been ordered.
They have been commissioned as a
gift of the temple’s Endowment
Committee, and will be dedicated
around the time of the High Holy
Days.
While no structural changes have
been planned for the sanctuary,
new carpeting and other refur-
bishments throughout the building
have been included in the remodel
ing plans.
Participating in the ground
breaking ceremonies were Edward
Sugarman, outgoing president and
the temple’s first building expan
sion chairman; Sara Deitch, vice
president of building expansion;
Michael Alembik, current building
expansion chairman; Berylann

architect.
Rabbi Philip Kranz, spiritual
leader of Temple Sinai, delivered a
prayer of dedication, referring to
the undertaking as a completion of
the building project begun 13 years
ago. He noted that, as Sinai was
celebrating its Chai year as a
Reform congregation in Atlanta, it
was also marking its bar/ bat mitzva
year in its home on Dupree Drive.
Following the ceremonies, con
gregation members were led on a
tour of the facilities under con
struction.
In another phase of the celebra
tion, honor was paid to former
officers and trustees having served
Temple Sinai during the past 18
years. Certificates of recognition
for service were given to over 40
former leaders who were present
for the occasion.
