Holocaust Torah unveiled
at Etz Chaim ceremonies
Etz Chaim’s Rabbi Shalom Lewis (left) and Egon Petschek at the
dedication of the Holocaust Torah. Petschek arranged for the Torah to
be given to the synagogue on permanent loan.
On Sunday, May I 1, Congrega
tion Etz Chaim of East Cobb dedi
cated its Holocaust Torah.
The 250-year-old scroll made its
way to the synagogue through the
efforts of congregation member
Egon Petschek. Petschek, while
traveling through Europe, arranged
for the sacred remnant of the war
to be given to Etz Chaim on per
manent loan. The Torah, from
Kolin, Czechoslovakia, Petschek’s
hometown, is one of the few ritual
items remaining from that once-
thriving Jewish community.
Ms. Gertrude Herschler, a noted
Holocaust chronicler and transla
tor, spoke to the congregation at
the dedication service, relating the
checkered history of Czech Jewry;
its glory and ultimately its de
struction.
Rabbi Shalom Lewis, spiritual
leader of Etz Chaim, reminded the
youngsters in the audience that
one-fourth of the murdered Jews
were innocent children, and that
their responsibility was to survive
as committed, knowledgeable Jew
ish adults.
Allen Shulman, president of the
synagogue, spoke of the impor
tance of Jewish education. He ded
icated the Kolin Torah in honor of
Rabbi Shalom and Shelley Lewis
for their work in support of educat
ing future generations.
Following the talks, six young
sters from the congregation lighted
six yahrzeit candles and led a silent
processional into the lobby for the
unveiling of the Shoah Torah.
The Torah is on permanent dis
play in the synagogue’s lobby; a
silent witness to the Shoah and to
Jewish rebirth.

UAHC group attends dedication
of Reform study center in Israel
—KIBBUTZ TZORAH, ISRAEL
Reform Judaism’s College Study
Center was dedicated here last
month in ceremonies marking the
bar mitzva anniversary of the pro
gram, which has brought some 300
young Americans for nine months
of work and study in Israel.
Among the graduates of the 1986
College Academic Year in Israel
was David Greene, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Greene of Atlanta, mem
bers of Temple Sinai. Leaders of
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations were special invited
guests at the dedication ceremo
nies, in recognition of the mission
to Israel of 36 members of the
UAHC board of trustees.
Mrs. Jan Epstein of Atlanta,
national board member of the
UAHC, spent 10 days here visiting
Reform Jewish institutions and
meeting with top Israeli govern
ment officials, including President
Chaim Herzog, Prime Minister
Shimon Peres and Vice Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir. Mrs.
Epstein brought greetings to David
Greene from his parents.
Akiva Levinsky, treasurer of the
Jewish Agency, which helped fund
the Center, was one of several
Israeli and American speakers who
addressed the dedication ceremony.
He praised the work of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega
tions, central body of Reform Jud
aism in the U.S. and Canada, and
praised the College Study Center
for “making a major contribution
toward the strengthening of ties
between American Jewry and Is
rael.”
He quoted a line from the 16th
Century Jewish poet Yehuda Ha
levi: “I came toward you, and
found you coming toward me.”
The College Study Center con
sists of classrooms, dormitories and
a study hall-lounge complex on the
grounds of the kibbutz. Rabbi
Stephen Schafer, veteran UAHC
youth director, received a certifi
cate from Israel’s United Kibbutz
Movement for helping to initiate
the program.
Rabbi Daniel Syme, vice presi
dent of the UAHC, said that in
1986 Reform Jewish congregations
in North America would send nearly
1,000 high school and college-age
young people to Israel in programs
ranging from six weeks to nine
months.
