JWVA celebrates 40 years of service

Forty years of service to Atlan
ta’s veterans and the Jewish com
munity were celebrated May 25 by
the Ladies Auxiliary of Mack
Frankel Atlanta Post 112, Jewish
War Veterans.
Mistress of ceremonies at a
champagne tea was Ida Solomon,
JWVA I 12's first president. who
saluted members who signed the
charter and have retained continu
ous membership: Pearl Frankel,
Muriel Gershon, Rosalie Gluck,
Mildred Hershberg, Frances
Horowitz, Sara Kessler, Helen l ips,
Rose Rappaport, Shirley Ruskin,
Eleanor Schwartz, Jean Sloan, Ida
Solomon, Ruth Unell and Jennie
Vrono. More than half these mem
bers are active in JWVA to this
day.
Also saluted were the Auxiliary
members of the year: Miriam
Bromberg, Carolyn Kessler, Ethel
Kessler, Eleanor Schwartz, Tillie
Shapiro and Bess Taffel.
Wives, mothers, sisters and
daughters of members of JWV
Post M2, spurred on by Mack
Frankel, organized JWVA 112 on
May 16, 1946. Committed to the
national auxiliary programs, JWV A
112 in the immediate post-war years
participated in Veterans Adminis
tration voluntary services, which
continues as an important part of
JWVA today.
On the national and international
level, JWVA’s efforts include:
working to pass the congressional
charter for the National Shrine for
the Jewish War Dead in 1958; col
lecting trading stamps nationwide
to provide a mini-bus to a Washing
ton, D.C. junior village in 1962;
distributing toys nationally; pro
moting the Safety on Wheels pro
gram; awarding scholarships
throughout the country and locally
as well as endowing permanent
scholarships at Brandeis Univer
sity; raising monies for ambulan
ces, medical supplies and hospital
equipment for Israel when it became
a state—only recently, a medical
library at the Chaim Sheba Medi
cal Center was furnished, and in
1981 JWVA equipped an operat
ing theater in Chaim Sheba Hospi
tal; JWVA also aids immigrants
who wish to become citizens; and
the Auxiliary has maintained a
continuing interest in the armed
forces, notably in 1982, when it
supported the building of the West
Point Chapel.
Volunteers have been honored
locally and nationally with awards
and blue ribbons for programs in
Americanism, child welfare, hospi
tal, VA volunteer service, public
ity, community relations, veterans
service, leadership and historian
book.
On the local level. Auxiliary
members also help Post 1 12 with
the quarterly blood drive, present
ing ROTC awards. Memorial Day
services at Marietta National
Cemetery grave decorating with
flags at Greenwood Cemetery and
Crest Lawn Memorial Park on
Memorial Day and Veterans Day,
and with out-of-hospital enter
tainment for V.A. Medical Center
patients.

JFS course on retirement
to get rolling on July 23
Jewish Family Services will hold
a tour-session course entitled “For
Persons Thinking About Retire
ment” that will meet at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesdays, beginning July 23 at
the JFS office. T he course is part
of the Jewish Family Life Educa
tion Program.
Retirement brings changes in
family life. Among the topics to be
discussed are opportunities in re
tirement, where to live, adjustment
health and well-being, and expec
tations.
Cost is $40 for couples and $32

Gertrude Lazar of the North
west Evening Chapter of B’nai B’rith
Women was named winner of the
Southeastern Region of BBW’s
Humanitarian Award at the organ
ization’s recent retreat in Atlanta.

community service and participa

I he Temple will dedicate
its new American flag
The Temple will dedicate its new
American Flag which flies in front
of The Temple Sanctuary facility
at 8:15 p.m. Friday, July 4.
The Bag is the gift of Herbert
and Jean Cohen, and they will
present the flag during Shabbat
service. Rabbi Alvin Sugarman will
deliver a sermon entitled, “Our
Flag and Our Faith.”
An Oneg Shabbat will follow on
the front lawn, weather permitting.
The entire community is invited to
this service.
