“Controversial Materials in the
Jewish Library,” which dealt with
Holocaust denial literature. Dele
gates held that it was urgent to
separate all “revisionist” material
from valid Holocaust literature to
avoid anv confusion among un
knowing individuals.
Adaire Klein, librarian of the
Simon Wiesenthal Center, Los
Angeles, stated that high school
students who ask for help on pa
pers about the “revisionists” are
given the analytical, secondary lit
erature on the subject. Decisions
have to be made by libraries on the
extent of free public access to
Holocaust denial literature. It was
not the role of the Center, she said,
to expose students to the “revision
ists.”
Earlier, Theodore Wiener, head
of Judaica cataloging at the Library
of Congress, stated that revisionist
material will very soon be given a
new subject heading separate from
Holocaust.” These materials are
currently categorized as “Holo
caust, Jewish (1939-1945)—errors,
inventions, etc.”

Why is it customary to tap one’s
closed fist over one’s heart when
offering confessions during prayer?
Sins are usually committed by a
combination of two features. One
is the feeling such as desire and
passion which leads one to commit
a sin. The other is the hand which
actually performs the deed, which
is considered to be sinful. In the
process of confessions offered
during prayer, the person indicates
that his sin was a combination of
passion and deed by tapping the
fist on the heart.
Why is it that in the process of
burial, when a group of people par
ticipates in the shoveling, the shovel
is not handed from one person to
another but rather placed on the
ground while the next person picks
it up?
This is considered a way of mak
ing sure that each person who does
the shoveling is doing as much as
possible in the activity. If the shovel
is passed to a person, the preroga
tive of actually picking up the
shovel is missed.
Why is it that, in the process of
shoveling the earth into the grave,
the shovel is turned backwards
instead of being used in the usual
forward position?
This is an indication that the per
son who is doing the shoveling is
doing it with regret. It is an expres
sion of consolation to the bereaved,
showing that the person who is
doing the shoveling shares the grief
of others. Some claim that the rev
ersal of the shovel demonstrates
the hope and the prayer that the
death which occurred will be rev
ersed into life in the hereafter.
Why is it that Hebrew scriptures
arc written only with a quill instead
of a metal pen?
Metal has been associated with
weapons used in war. The official
Hebrew scriptures, like the Torah
which is read in the synagogue and
the Mezuza which is placed on the
doorway of Jewish homes, are sup
posed to be elements of peace.
Therefore, they should not be writ
ten with metal pens which might be
considered instruments of war.
Some sources trace this to the
restriction in the Bible (Exodus
20:25) where the altar, which was
made of stone in the Holy Taber
nacle, could not be made from
stone which was shaped with metal
instruments, since the altar was an
object of peace.
Other sources say that the com
parison between a metal pen and a
feather quill would be like the
comparison between a living object
and a dead material. The quill
comes from a bird which lived,
while metal comes from a product
which has no life. The scriptures
are supposed to be the Living Word
of the Almighty which means that
they are relevant to all people at all
times.
