Lebanon quite close to the Israeli-
Lebanese border.
Because it was night and the
guerrillas were able to hide amidst
the limestone cliffs, the IDF had a
difficult time suppressing them.
The army, eager to prevent them
from escaping, launched a frontal
attack against the guerrillas and in
the process two IDF soldiers were
killed and nine others wounded.
All four guerrillas were killed after
the three-hour gunfight.
It was the first time since Israel
left Lebanon in June 1985 that
such a violent clash had occurred
between the IDF and Palestinian
Arab guerrillas near the northern
border. Two Syrian-backed groups
took credit for the raid.
The same afternoon as the raid,
Thursday, Israel’s Air Force car
ried out a retaliatory attack against
terrorist bases near the Ein-Hilwe
refugee camp in Sidon in south
Lebanon. Then on Sunday, a sec
ond air attack was launched. This
time the Israeli Air Force demol
ished targets in terrorists bases in
the Druse-held hills south of Bei
rut, killing at least two terrorists
and wounding a dozen, according
to Israeli sources.

the impact of terrorist attacks. He
did not mention Saudi Arabia.
Demolishing a contention fre
quently stated by anti-Israelis that
absence of a Palestinian state justi
fies terrorism, Shultz said, “A second
thing that is often said is that ter
rorists are engaged in a justified,
sometimes noble, cause, and that if
we want to do something about it
we have to get at the so-called root
causes. This is a snare and a delu
sion to fall for this line of reasoning.
“In defending those who took
the Achille Lauro, for instance, they
were called by their defense lawyer
‘freedom fighters.’ That is a bunch
of baloney. They weren’t advanc
ing freedom by brutalizing the ship’s
passengers and killing an innocent

and crippled man. What they were
seeking to do, so they said, any
way, was to free comrades of theirs,
so-called, who has been jailed for
earlier terrorist attacks.” After not
ing one of them was in jail for mur
dering a four-year-old girl, Shultz
added, “so where does that leave
your root causes and freedom figh
ters? You can throw that in the
junk pail.”
“It is a matter of outrage,” Shultz
said, “to hear people refer in this
regard to the so-called Palestinian
issue. And you ask yourself, what
side are the terrorists really on.”
He pointed to the assassination of
Mayor Al-Maari of Nablus who
“stepped up to responsibility” in
the “interests of the Palestinian
cause” and peace.
Israeli wins AZA award
WASHINGTON—Yosef Yaa-
kov, Minister-counselor and con
sul-general for Israel in Washing
ton, has been named the 1986
recipient of the Sam Beber AZA
Distinguished Alumnus Award by
the B’nai B’rith Youth Organiza
tion (BBYO).
The award is named in honor of
the founder of AZA.
Yaakov was a founding member
of AZA in Shanghai, China, in
1939 and later served as second
president of the 25-member chap
ter. He was also a member of the
Jewish Boy Scouts in China.
Although Shanghai was the cen
ter of Jewish activity in the Far
East prior to the Second World
War, there was no BBYO activity
before the establishment of the
Shanghai Chapter.
The chapter remained in exist-'
ence until the Japanese occupation
of Shanghai. Then, its members
began to leave China to pursue
careers and new lives in other
countries.
Yaakov, who had been studying
law, decided to move to Israel in
1948, during the Israeli War of
Independence.
In Israel, he served two and a
half years in the military and then
entered government service in the
field of broadcasting for the prime
minister’s office. While in China he
had served as a news correspond
ent for United Press International
during the Chinese Civil War and
as a broadcaster at the American
radio station in the Far East.
