Vacation time
Rabbi Schneerson
Adapted Irom the works of Rabbi Menachem M
Schneerson. the l.ubavitcher Rebbe. by Rabbi
Vosst New. Chabad ol Georgia
Vacation time is here, releasing
youths and children, boys and girls,
from schools, including Hebrew
schools, for a long summer recess.
The importance of a restful vaca
tion is obvious. However, certain
aspects of vacation time should be
examined carefully. Is vacation time
a stoppage of education, or is it a
transition from one form of activ
ity to another?
In all living things, there is no
such thing as a stoppage of life fol
lowed by a completely new start —
for a stoppage of life is death, and
cannot serve as a temporary rest
period. There can be a transition
from one form of activity to an
other, but not a cessation or stop
page. For example: The two most
vital organs in our body are the
heart and the brain. The heart is
the principal center of “physical”
life; the brain is the principal center
of “intellectual” life. Because the
heart and brain have supreme con
trol of the body, they are called
“the sovereigns ol the body.” Now
these organs never cease to operate
in a living body; they do not even
undergo a radical change in their
form of activity. And since the
actions of the other organs are led
by the activity of the heart and the
brain, it follows that the other
organs of the body, though they
may seem to be in a state of inactiv
ity, as in the case of sleep, do not in
reality stop working.
This is even more obvious in the
case of breathing. We find that
during sleep breathing is slowed
down considerably, but it never
stops, for the “breath of life” must
always be present.
Similarly in the case of boys and
girls released from school. Vaca
tion does not mean interruption
and stoppage of Torah and mitz-
vot in the Jewish way of life, G-d
forbid. It is rather, another way of
furthering their course. It is a period
during which they renew their men
tal abilities and increase their
capacities for a more intensive study
and a more fully committed reli
gious life later on.
Vacationing youth should there
fore bring light and holiness into
their vacation time, by remember
ing always that it is the time of
preparation in order to improve
the quality and quantity of their
studies during the study-time to
follow. However, this should not
remain so only in their thoughts
TORONTO (JTA)—The Board
of Education of Waterloo County
(Ontario), one of the largest school
boards in Canada, has suspended
teaching of Shakespeare’s “The
Merchant of Venice” pending a
decision by the Education Minis
try or the Ontario Human Rights
Commission as to whether the
Shakespeare play is anti-Semitic.
But the coalition of Jewish and
non-Jewish parents which had
complained to the board that Jew
ish children were taunted and
harassed in classes where the play
was taught, protested last week
that the school board went too far.
“It’s censorship of the worst
kind,” said Dr. Mona Zentner,
leader of the interfaith parents
coalition which wanted “The Mer
chant of Venice” eliminated only
from the curriculum of interme
diate grades 7 to 10. “They’re finally
and intentions; they should always
be united with our holy Torah in
their everyday actions and con
duct. Not a single day should pass
without the “breath of life” pro
vided by “the Torah of Life.” Ev
eryone should have appointed times
for some kind of Jewish study—
each one according to his or her
standard of Torah education.
May all who are resolved to use
their vacation in this productive
“living” way, enjoy much success,
both during vacation, as well as on
returning to normal study later on.
recognizing there’s a problem but
is not what we wanted,” Zentrter
said.
The Board of Education voted
10-8 to remove the play from the
intermediate grades but also banned
it, at least temporarily, from the
higher grades. The issue, which has
been simmering since 1966, came
to a head in Waterloo last month.
Jewish and Christian pupils des
cribed prejudice apparently fueled
by the play in which Shylock, a
Jewish money-lender, demands a
pound of flesh from a Christian
debtor. According to the pupils,
Jewish classmates were called
names, had swastikas carved on
their desks and had pennies tossed
at them.
The Waterloo County case was
the second of its kind in Ontario.
Earlier, the Lakehead County Board
of Education removed the play
from the ninth grade curriculum
after parents protested.
