The Bat Mitzva of Elissa
Gootman will take place at 10
a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Con
gregation Children of Israel in
Athens.
Elissa is the daughter of Mari
lyn and Elliot Gootman. She is
the granddaughter of Mrs.
Miriam Gootman of Boston and
the late Solomon J. Gootman,
and Judge and Mrs. Samuel
Eisenstadt.
Elissa will share her Bat
Mitzva with Olga Ioffe of Lenin
grad, U.S.S.R.
The Bar Mitzva of Michael Aaron
Liss will take place at 10 a.m., Sat
urday, Sept. 6 at Temple Emanu-
El. A congregational kiddush will
follow.
Michael is the son of Linda and
Ralph Liss. He is the grandson of
Lucille Gross of University Heights,
Ohio, and the late Irwin Liss, and
the late Marion Blumes and Jack
Koven of Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada.

Robert Klee has been accepted
into the fall program of the Semes
ter At Sea. The program, academi
cally sponsored by the University
of Pittsburgh, is a global semester
which combines an academic inter
national experience with travel to
Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong,
Malaysia, India, Turkey, Russia,
Yugoslavia and Spain.
Upon returning, Klee will grad
uate from Curry College in Massa
chusetts, where he was selected
into the Alexander Graham Bell
Highest Academic Honorary and
is a top participant on the college’s
varsity tennis team.
He is the son of Rita and Ronald
Klee of Atlanta.
The Bar Mitzva of Alan
Nathan Jockers will take place
at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6,
at Congregation B’nai Torah. A
congregational kiddush will fol
low.
Alan is the son of Susan and
Stephen Jockers. Grandparents
are Doris Gold of Miami, Miriam
and Lawrence Freeman of Tal
lahassee, Fla., and Edythe and
Clifford Jockers of Atlanta.
Alan will share his Bar Mitzva
with Robert Khanukaev of the
Soviet Union.
Lore Segal has been chosen the
recipient of the 1986 Harold U.
Ribalow Prize for her third novel,
“Her First American,” published
by Alfred A. Knopf. The award,
administered by Hadassah Maga
zine, is given annually for a work
of fiction on a Jewish theme.
Ms. Segal, whose book deals
with the relationship and affair
between a young Jewish Holocaust
survivor and a black American
intellectual, was one of three
authors nominated for the Ribalow
Prize. The others were Harold
Brodkey, for “Women and Angels”
(Jewish Publication Society) and
Leslie Epstein for “Goldkorn Tales”
(Dutton).
Judges were authors Elie Wiesel,
Chaim Potok and Max Apple.

Dr. Lance B. Friedland of At
lanta has recently completed his
residency and fellowship at Tufts
New England Medical Center in
Boston. A graduate of the Medical
College of Georgia, he is practicing
cardiology with the Cardiovascu
lar Group in Gwinnett County.
His wife, Susan Kazlow Fried-
land, a native of Savannah, teaches
art at Milton High School in Al
pharetta.

David is the son of Malvina
and Sasson Bechor. He is the

At his bris, Daniel wore a bris
gown which has been in his family
for over 85 years, and was also
worn by his maternal uncle, grand
father and great-grandfather.
