Reform conference to focus
on ‘Jews in Search of God’
More than a dozen Reform rab
bis from Atlanta and the Southeast
will lead discussion groups at the
third Conference on Spirituality
on Sunday, Sept. 21, at The Tem
ple, 1589 Peachtree Street, N.E.
from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Reform Jews in Search of God:
The Mitzvot—Law or Lore?” is the
theme of this year’s conference that
once again encourages the entire
Jewish community to attend. Rabbi
Samuel Karff of Congregation Beth
Israel, Houston, will be the key
note speaker.
The Atlanta Reform Synagogue
Council. UAHC Southeastern Re
gional Conference and the UAHC
Joint Commission on Worship co
sponsored the first conference in
Atlanta two years ago. Since then,
the concept is being accepted in
regions throughout the country.
Last year’s conference in Atlanta
drew more than 250 participants.
Gary Metzel, conference chair
man, says there is a need for Reform
Jews to “deepen their spirituality
and understanding of Judaism. This
conference allows all attendees to
do this, no matter what their level
of worship may be. There will be
more than a dozen sessions to
include the following topics: To
Observe or Not to Observe: That is
the Question; The Reform Jew as
an Observant Jew; God: Comman-
der-in-Chief or Errand Boy?

$7.50 a person by Sept. 15, payable

‘Book of Abraham’ rights sold
for paperback at record $231,000
“The Book of Abraham” by
Marek Halter, a sweeping epic
novel that covers 80 generations of
Jewish life over some 2,000 years,
has been sold for paperback publi
cation for $231,000—a record sum
for a foreign author on a Jewish
theme.
The Dell publishing house, which
bought the- rights to Halter’s best
seller, plans to issue the paperback
edition in the Spring of 1987.
Widely praised in Europe, where
it was first published, “The Book
of Abraham” rose quickly to the
best-seller list in the United States
when it reached U.S. bookstores
last April. Publisher’s Weekly called
it “fascinating reading” in this
review:
“This massive novel aims to be
nothing less than a history of the
Jewish people, as traced through
the generations of one family. Hal
ter (the name means scribe, or
record keeper) begins his tome in
70 C.E. in Jerusalem, when a scribe
named Abraham flees the conquer
ing Roman army.
“The book follows the dynasty
of scribes descended from Abra
ham through the centuries, until he
links them to his own real-life
ancestors, a line of printers, one of
whom worked with Gutenberg in
Strasbourg. The chronicle moves

among dozens of cities in Asia and

historic events and social milieu of
time and place, as each generation
of this family hands down the so-
called Book of Abraham, a record
of births and deaths that also sym

Prime Minister Shimon Peres of
Israel hailed it as “a fascinating
portrayal of the history of our
people...a wonderful epic that de
serves to be translated into Hebrew
to be used as required text in our
schools... . An exceptional book.”
Marek Halter was born in War
saw in 1936. When he was five, he
and his family escaped the Nazis by
crawling through the sewers under
the Warsaw Ghetto and spent the
rest of the war in the U.S.S.R. He
returned to Poland when the war
ended, then emigrated to France,
where he has been living since
1950.
