Celebration in Curacao
Curacao’s Congregation Mikve Israel-Emanuel, completed in 1732, is
the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the New World.

It was a festival to celebrate over
300 years of Jews living in peace
and safety in Curacao, Netherlands
Antilles, and 240 Canadian, Puerto
Rican and American Jews flew to
the sunny island to help mark the
occasion last January.
Based at the Plaza Hotel in
downtown Willemstad, and the
Princess Beach Hotel and the
Curacao Concorde on the beach,
the participants were treated to all
the traditional delight of a vaca
tion on a Caribbean island, as well
as to services at the historic Con
gregation Mikve Israel-Emanuel
with Jewish islanders, Onegei
Shabbat, cocktail receptions, and
Saturday night banquets complete
with guest speakers and a calypso
band playing horas.
When Curacao’s Lieutenant
Governor Ronald Casseres was
presented a plaque to commemo
rate the thriving existence of the
oldest Jewish community in the
Western Hemisphere, he praised
the contributions of Jews to Cura
cao. He said, “The Jews are builders
of our society. So when you give
me this award, Isay—in the Amer
ican way—‘what’s the big dealT ”
There was an in-depth tour of
Mikve Israel-Emanuel, and the
cemetery, led by Charles Gomes
Casseres, who is president of the
temple’s Council of Elders. Gomes
Casseres is one of those Curacao
Jews who can trace his ancestry on
the island back seven generations,
and he pointed out grave sites of
his ancestors. He also pointed out
the grave of the philosopher Spin
oza’s sister.
The cemetery has old graves
tones with elaborate pictures beau
tifully carved out of white marble.
These were based on the profession
of the deceased, or his Hebrew
name or tribal lineage. For exam
ple, there are hands with fingers
held in the position of the priestly
blessing, if the person had been a
Kohen; there are engravings of
ships in the water, for sea captains;
and there are the highly ornate
scenes for those named after Bible
heroes, such as Mordecai riding
the king’s horse.
Next to Congregation Mikve Is
rael-Emanuel there is a small salon,
which one enters by walking across
a black-and-white tile courtyard.
This salon is called the Sala Con-
sistorial, and it is used on every
Shabbat and most holidays for a
kiddush and blessing over the chal-
laot after services.
On the walls are several old and
interesting synagogue items, in
cluding two of the six old candles
which stood on the balustrade of
the original Holy Ark of the con
gregation, used before there was
electricity.
Despite the presence of the guests,
the Friday night of the festival was
no different from all Friday nights,
when Rabbi Aaron Peller leads the
singing of “Happy Birthday” in
honor of the children of the con
gregation who are celebrating that
week. The song is done five
times—in five different languages—
Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, He
brew and Papiemento.
