Year's 10 new headliners
by Carl Alpert
—HAIFA
At this Rosh Hashana season it
is our annual custom to review the
new names which made headlines
in Israel during the past year. Once
listed, a name does not qualify
again, so these are the names of
new personalities which, for better
or for worse, attracted major atten
tion here during the 12 months just
elapsed. The order is alphabetical.
Moshe Bejski, justice of the Su
preme Court, headed the commis
sion of inquiry that shook Israel's
banking system following their rig
ging of bank shares, which led to a
collapse of bank securities. The
heads of all the major banks and
the governor or the Bank of Israel
were compelled to resign, and major
reforms in the system were recom
mended.
George Bush, vice president of
the United States, paid a four-day
visit to Israel which was regarded
by many as symbolizing the con
tinued close and friendly relations
between Israel and the U.S., but
was seen by some cynics as a politi
cal gimmick intended to advance
his own candidacy for the presid
ency in the next U.S. elections.
King Hassan of Morocco made
history when he invited Prime Min
ister Shimon Peres for a visit to
Morocco to clarify respective Israel
and Arab stands on Middle East
issues. Through a joint commu
nique issued at the conclusion of
the meeting, each side made it clear
that it could not accept the views of
the other. Though falling short of
the Sadat trip to Jerusalem, the
conference was nevertheless re
garded as a significant milestone of
progress, even if only technical in
nature.
Jonathan Jay Pollard, U.S.
naval intelligence analyst in Wash
ington was accused of spying for
Israel and of handing top secret
documents over to Israeli agents.
The charge was that Israel embassy
officials had recruited Pollard and
had made payments to him for his
services. The case caused consider
able embarrassment to Israel, and
was exploited by foes of the coun
try seeking to worsen Israel-U.S.
I
relations.
Rafael Recanati, head of the
Discount Bank, at first refused to
follow the example of his col
leagues, the heads of the other
banks, by resigning as recommended
by the Bejski Commission. His
bank put up a sustained legal and
public relations battle, maintain
ing that their bank was a private
business, and did not have to heed
the recommendations of a govern
ment commission which was not a
court of law. In the end, Recanati
withdrew.
Rita, a new, home-grown sing
ing-acting star appeared in the
entertainment sky suddenly during
the year. A powerful voice, a spark
ling personality and public sym
pathy for her because she was not
chosen as Israel’s representative to
the Eurovision contest, helped con
siderably by a skillful public rela
tions campaign, made her an instant
hit. Her role as Liza in the revival
of the Hebrew version of “My Fair
Lady,” assures that this is a star
which will continue to shine bright
ly-
Natan Shcharansky came home
to Israel after nine years of a 13-
year sentence in a Soviet jail. He
was released as part of an East-
West prisoner exchange, and has
since come to symbolize the un
quenchable desire for freedom by
Russian Jewry. His wife, Avital,
who had led the tireless fight for his
release, withdrew from the head
lines, but her devoted and persist
ent efforts in his behalf have not
been forgotten.
Avraham Shalom, head of the
General Security Service of Israel
(the Shin Bet) found himself the
center of a public scandai when it
was revealed that two Arab terror
ists, apprehended during their mur
derous hijacking of a bus in Israel,
had been killed after their capture.
Public indignation was stimulated
against the fact that the secret ser
vice operatives had at first denied
the facts and had sought to cover
up. Shalom and his colleagues were
pardoned by President Chaim Her
zog before being tried.
Kurt Waldheim made headlines
in Israel as he ran for election as
president of Austria, despite

mounting evidence of his partici
pation in Nazi war crimes as well as
his attempts to conceal that past.
Indignation in Israel notwithstand
ing, the Austrian electorate gave
him a vote of confidence.
Chava Yaari, wife of one of
Israel TV’s most popular news com
mentators, was accused of the mur
der of a woman in Tel Aviv to
cover up alleged thefts of money.
And for those with long memo
ries, the following are the 10 names
which made the list last year. How
many do you remember? David
Balas, Ruth Davidov, Abdel Wahab
Darousha, Mrs. Miriam Groff,
Pinhas Groob, Hadas Kedmi, Rabbi
Yitzhak Peretz, Moshe Shachal,
Dr. Avraham Suhami and Yitzhak
Tunik.
A happy and healthy New Year
