Assistant Executive Director
The AJCC is pleased to present “Book Ends,” a
program in celebration of Jewish Book Month, on
Saturday evening, Nov. 22, and Sunday, Nov. 23.
Book Ends will have something for everyone.
Books to buy, books to look at, books to admire. New
books, used books and rare books. PLUS...records,
tapes, calendars, gift wraps, greeting cards and more...
Saturday evening will feature, as part of Cafe
Dizengoff, Yale Strom, in an informal bistro setting.
Sunday will feature two well-known authors, Charles
Silberman and Rabbi Dov Edelstein.
Silberman, who will deliver the Sidney Janus
Memorial Lecture, is one of this country’s most dis
tinguished journalist/scholars. He is the author of
four of the most provocative and influential books of
the last quarter century: “Crisis in Black and White”
(1964), “Crisis in the Classroom” (1970), “Criminal
Violence, Criminal Justice” (1978), and “A Certain
People: American Jews and Their Lives Today”
perceived by their Christian neighbors.
Silberman s topic will be “Jews in America: 1 Have
Good News and Bad News.”
Silberman is coming to Atlanta as the Sidney
Janus Memorial lecturer by Mrs. Lea Janus and the
Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
Rabbi Edelstein will speak on his book, “Worlds
Torn Asunder.” He is a survivor of Auschwitz and
Bergen Belsen and he tells in “Worlds Torn Asunder”
how faith can make all the difference when there is
nothing else left to hold on to.
Strom is a graduate of San Diego University and
New York University, with a master’s degree in Yid
dish studies emphasizing the social history of the
klezmer (Yiddish folk instrumentalist), 1880-1939.
He has been involved with klezmer music since
1981 when he did field recordings in Eastern Europe
and used this material as repertoire for his band, Zmi-
ros. Zmiros’ new recording, “Eclectic Klezz,” features
12 tunes, five of which were composed by Strom. Both
this album and the previous “Cholent with Huckleb
erry” were produced by Strom and are distributed
nationally.
Strom is coming to Atlanta courtesy of a grant
from Temple Emanu-El.

Hailed as “...the most important study of Ameri

“A Certain People” was awarded the Present Tense
Literary Award for the outstanding non-fiction book
of 1985. It has been the subject of intense controversy
and debate in both the Jewish and non-Jewish com
