Vic Maslias to chair
OVS Bonds Dinner
Lenore and Victor D. Maslia
will co-chair the Or VeShalom
Bonds Dinner to be held at 6
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, honoring
Louise and Leo Benatar.
Their acceptance was an
nounced by Asher Benator, gen
eral chairman of the Altanta
Campaign Cabinet.
Victor Maslia, a native Atlan
tan, graduated from Emory Uni
versity with a degree in journal
ism. He has served on the board
of Or VeShalom for over 34
years. In 1961, he served as pres
ident of the congregation and
had chaired many committees,
including the New Building Com
mittee. In 1972 he was the con
gregation’s first Israel Bonds
honoree.
Maslia is on the board of the
newly created Buckhead Bank
and is a former president of the
Apartment Owners and Manag
ers Association. He is a member
of Gate City B’nai B’rith, ORT,
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter and has served on the Federa
tion board and several of its
committees for many years. He
also belongs to Fulton Masonic
Lodge No. 216, the Scottish Rite
and the Shrine.
Leonore Maslia has been in
volved with Or VaShalom’s Sis
terhood, Hadassah, B’nai B’rith
Women and ORT. She has been
active with Israel Bonds and has
acted as mistress of ceremonies

rael, will be the guest speaker at
the Beth Jacob Israel Bonds
Dinner to be held at the syn
agogue at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov.
16.
Hackel, a native of Jackson
ville, Fla., received a bachelor of
arts degree, from the University
of Florida and a master’s degree
in journalism from Columbia
University in New York.
After college, he worked for
the Associated Press. From there
he served as news director, anchor,
reporter or correspondent for
television stations in Cleveland,

Ohio; San Juan, P.R.; Washing
ton, D.C.; and Gainesville, Fla.
Hackel also served as a corres
pondent for the American Broad
casting Company television net
work and the Mutual Broadcast
ing System radio networks.
In 1972, Hackel served as press
secretary for Sen. Hubert H.
Humphrey’s presidential cam
paign.
He went to Israel in 1980, to
serve as Cable News Network’s
correspondent in Tel Aviv.
Hackel and his wife, Dr. Ar-
mona Livneh, have two children.
The Hackels are members of
Beth Jacob.

Columbia AZA chapter plans dinner-dance
event will include recognition of
the original members of the chap
ter and all the advisers. The
committee has identified more
than 200 former members and 20
former and current advisers.
Manuel Lifchez heads a com
mittee preparing a commemora
tive book spotlighting the Colum
bia chapter’s past 50 years. “If
anyone has any photographs,
program books, dance tickets or
other memorabilia, please let us
know so we can include it in this
book,” Lifchez said.
“We’re asking anyone who was
associated with the chapter to
help us identify as many former
Columbia AZA members, sweet
hearts and advisers as possible,”
said Neil Cohen, BBYOcommit-
tee chairman. “We’re expecting
between 150 and 200 people at
this gala.”

The Paul Schwartz chapter of
AZA in Columbia, S.C., will
celebrate its 50th anniversary on
Saturday evening, Nov. 22, with
a dinner-dance at the Ramada
Hotel, 1-77 and Two Notch Road
in Columbia.
“This Thanksgiving dance will
be reminiscent of the community
wide dances of the past,” said
Ruby Harris, a member of the
BBYO gala committee.
