AJCC Presents “Bookends”
November 22-23 at Peachtree
The Jewish people have always been known
as the “People of the Book.” There are an array
of customs, such as kissing books, closing them
when not in use, which Jews apply to holy books.
Jewish literature is crammed with references to
the nobility of books. Books about Jews, about
Israel, best sellers by Jews and about Jews,
represent a disproportionate percentage of the
best-seller lists. It should not be surprising there
fore, that the AJCC’s Annual Book Fair, Satur
day, Nov. 22 and Sunday, Nov. 23, this year
called “Bookends” is one of our most looked-
forward-to and successful programs. In addition
to the Book Shuk, where you can wander
through bookstalls filled with children’s books,
books on cooking, Judaica, books in Hebrew
and gift books, records and tapes, used and new
books, Chassidic books and rare books, there are
several special events that you shouldn’t miss.
Charles Silberman, the Sidney Q. Janus
Memorial Lecturer, is one of this country’s most
distinguished journalists and scholars. Silber
man authored the provocative book “Crises in
^Classroom” in 1970and “Crises in Black and
hite in 1964, and then turned his considerable
talents to analyzing the Jewish community. “A
Certain People” has been one of the most
debated works of this decade. It has been called
the most important study of American Jewish
life in the last 40 years. It gives us a fresh look at
how we perceive ourselves and the way we really
are perceived by our Christian neighbors. The
lecture is Sunday, Nov. 23, 8 p.m. at Peachtree.
1 his lecture is free and open to the community.
Cafe Dizengoff, an Israeli cabaret program
featuring Yale Strom, one of this country’s out
standing klezmer (Yiddish folk instrumentalist)
musicians, who has cut several albums, will pro
vide a thoroughly enjoyable evening in an infor
mal bistro setting. Cafe Dizengoff will open Sat
urday evening, Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m. at Peachtree.
“Chana’s Sabbath Dress,” our first produc
tion by the Center’s Children’s Acting Troop, is
directed by Ronit Singer. This is a traditional
Israeli folktale brought to life by this delightful
group of youngsters. This show will be presented
on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. There is no charge.
... and more
Rare Book Exhibit classic Hebraic volumes
on display from private collections.
The Poet, our magical computer, will create a
personalized poem on a decorative gift card.
Rabbi Dov B. Edelstein, an Auschwitz survi
vor, speaks on his book, “Worlds Torn Asunder,”
from 3-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23. There is no

The Book Shuk and these special events are
sponsored by the AJCC. Charles Silberman is
coming to Atlanta as the Sidney Q. Janus Mem
