Hlie Wiesel, selected as winner
of the Nobel Peace Award, dra
matizes the characteristics of the
Jewish people, a true contribu
tion to the world.
The prize is shared by Jews
everywhere. And it dramatizes
his heritage and the legacy of his
forefathers, which resulted in this
great honor and recognition.
It seems that the Jew is born as
an adult, with maturity and re
sponsibility, an adult responsible
for his own deeds and conduct.
He was too occupied with being a
good citizen, and too busy con
tributing to the welfare of the
host country. What people can
make that claim?

of Atlanta's Jewish population.
“From our new home, we are
looking forward to reaching out
to the community, providing them
with a Jewish identity and en
hancing their education.
“We plan to finance the build
ing through normal fund-raising
efforts, and by renting out space
to other community agencies. We
are now a landlord instead of a
tenant. Getting the building is a
major milestone in the high
school's history, but we still have
a lot of work ahead of us.”
Yeshiva’s history began on Aug.

has emerged as one of the intrigu
ing puzzle pieces in the case.
Last week, press reports indicated
that former U.S. Attorney Gen
eral Elliot Richardson arranged
a contact between American offi
cials and Hashemi last year in
efforts to free American hostages
in Lebanon.
According to defense attorneys
in the case, Hashemi played a
similar role in 1980 when the
Carter administration contacted
him to expedite the release of the
American hostages in the U.S.
Embassy in Teheran. Hashemi
was indicted in 1984 for selling
American weapons to Iran, after
The philosophy of the Jew w as
that he was born with liabilities
to his God, to his parents, to his
ancestors, to his heritage, to his
country, to his people and man
kind, and that he must dedicate
his lifetime to repaying those
obligations and justifying his life
on this earth. What a lesson this
teaches mankind today, if only
they understood what life is all
about.
Leo Tolstoy said this about the
Jews. 1 quote, “The Jew is the
sacred being who has brought
down from heaven the everlast
ing fire, and has shared it with
the entire world. He is the reli
gious source, spring, and foun
tain out of which all the rest of
the peoples have drawn their
the guidance of Rabbi Benjamin
Rose started classes inside a large
mansion on LaVista Road. At
that time and now, it is the only
Yeshiva high school between
Washington, D.C., and Miami.
The high school became ac
credited by the Southern Associ
ation of Colleges and Schools in
1980, and five years later received
exemplary recognition from the
United States Department of Ed
ucation for having an excellent
academic environment.
“Now, we are able to grow,”
said Cohen, “Everybody here is
excited. We are already prepar
ing to move. The search for a new
home is finally over.”
Conspiracy
an FBI surveillance of his room
in 1980-81 revealed his activities.
Attorneys have said Hashemi
made a deal with the U.S. Attor
ney’s office to act as an infor
mant in this case in exchange for
leniency on the 1984 charges.
Kunstler referred to an uncon
firmed rumor during the hearing.
He suggested that a defendant
named in the indictment, John
de la Roque, who is still a fugi
tive, is really Lt. Col. Oliver
North of the Marine Corps, a
highly placed official of the
National Security Council. North
is reportedly one of the chief
architects of the Iranian-U.S.
arms exchange and often disguises
himself and uses false names to
beliefs and their religions.
“The Jew is the pioneer of lib
erty, even in the olden days when
the people were divided into two
distinct classes—slaves and mas
ters.”
The world holds many myster
ies, but I believe God has his own
plans and reasons to keep our
people alive in all parts of the
world. 1 believe this is for the
sake of humanity and mankind
rather than a sign of favoritism
to our people. We have not been
favored with worldly possessions,
with military power, with great
armies, or with vast lands, but
entrusted to be the conscience of
mankind. And in spite of the
tragedies that have fallen upon
us, we have met our responsibili
ties, and we have met the test of
faith.
The heroes of the past lived
their lives and made their sacrifi
ces in order that their descend
ants might have a fund of wis
dom for inspiration and practical
living. Their life and effort were
wasted unless they lead to action
on our part, to defend what we
have received from the past, and
if possible to enrich it further.
Think of Germany in the year
1006. There is a Jewish pogrom
going on—women tying stones
around their waists and jumping
in rivers to escape indignities.
When the disaster is over, 12,000
Jews have been killed. Yet at the
very same time this tragedy is
taking place, Avenzoas, a Jewish
doctor, is seated in his labora-
conceal his identity.
On the tapes, the defendants
discuss de la Roque’s role in the
negotiations. He is said to be, on
the tapes, a former member of
the Delta Force who is very
friendly with Marine Corps Com
mandant Gen. P.X. Kelley and
with other top administration
officials. On one tape, Evans told
Hashemi that de la Roque met
with Bush’s aides in West Ger
many to discuss the covert ship
ment of arms to Iran.
The defense attorneys also
made motions to subpoena North,
National Security Adviser John
Poindexter, Bush and other gov
ernment officials. Sand did not
rule on this motion.

ing of paralysis and inflamma
tion of the inner ear.
Think of Portugal in 1148. It is
the year of the First Crusade. A
decree is signed ordering all Jews
to leave for Islam on pain of
death. Being uprooted from their
homes, they trudge poverty-
stricken to other lands. They are
unwelcome, while barbarous mobs
harass and murder the rear guard.
At the same time, the great Jew
ish rabbi and philosopher Mai-
monides is completing his book
on personal hygiene, which is so
brilliant that even to this day its
precepts are recognized.
The Portugal of that day col-
lasped and became a backward
nation, but the work of Maimo-
nides has given health and life to
thousands of people.
Think of Spain in 1492. A fan
atical Queen Isabella persuades
the king to sign a decree directing
all Jews to leave Spain within
four months. The Goebbels of
the period are put in charge of
that pogrom. They invent the
torture rack. For nine months
Jews are burned alive for refusal
to deny their religion. Yet while
this disaster is taking place, Dr.
Salonica makes the first surgical
discovery in respect to the eye.
He is the doctor who restored the
vision of the king, the very king
who signed that infamous decree.
The Spain of that day col
lapsed, despite the discovery of
America, which should have made
it the most powerful nation of the
world. But the work of Dr.
Salonica has given light to tens of
thousands of men, women, and
children, and his achievements
live on in triumph.
Think of Russia in the year
1903. A feeble czar, shaky on his
throne, decides to organize the
mobs by ordering the Kisineff
pogrom. For days terror reigns.
Jews are dragged and trampled
to death by mobs. Children are
thrown out of third story win
dows. Synagogues are burned to
the ground. While the rabbis are
tied to the pulpit, the streets are
filled with blood. Yet at the very
moment that catastrophe is tak
ing place, the great Jewish Dr.
Carl Wiegard is completing his
experiments, which reveal the
pathological anatomy of small
pox and Bright’s disease. He is
the first doctor to stain bacteria.
It is he who discovers that the
repair of tissue exceeds the amount
of injury.
The Russia of that day col
lapsed, but the work of Weigard
lives in triumph.
This is the symbol of our peo
ple. The symbol of the preserva
tion of life against those forces
that seek to destroy it. The
symbol of humanity against bar
barism. For us Judaism is not
merely the rites and ceremonies
that we enjoy, and which enrich
our lives, but it is the symbol of
the great struggle going on in the
world to preserve civilization.
Elie Wiesel accepted this honor
in memory of six million souls
who were killed, and will be
remembered, so that it will never
be tolerated by mankind ever
again.
