Rabbi hails new generation
of Orthodox Jews’devotion
STAMFORD, Conn.
(JTA)—U.S. Orthodox Jewry is
now able to provide “alternative
leadership” to American Jewry
in lieu of those leaders who have
abandoned Jewish tradition, ac
cording to Rabbi Moshe Sherer,
president of Agudath Israel of
America.
Speaking here last month at
the opening of the Orthodox
organization’s 64th national
convention. Sherer hailed the
ascendancy of a new generation
of Orthodox Jews committed to
the Torah and activism on its
behalf.
Me criticized w hat he said was
an “unholy alliance of secular.
Conservative and Reform Jew
ish leaders to change the policies
of non-Zionist yeshivoth in Israel
by attempting to cut off their
Jewish Agency funding raised
through the United Jewish Appeal.
Rabbi Berel Wein of Monsey,
N.Y., rapped non-Orthodox
leaders and the media, including
the Anglo-Jewish press, for por
traying Orthodox Jews as fanati
cal fragmenters of Jewish unity
rather than the keepers of tradi
tion.

Where there is life
by David Amato
T he ( Mexico) News
This is about a 74-year-old
man who, after being seriously
injured at age 5 and hospitalized
on and off for two years and after
a serious heart attack nine years
ago, attributes his immunity from
pessimism to the uplifting influ
ence of the Book of Psalms em
phasizing where there is life there
is hope.
Still very much actively alive,
he asks, in the words of Psalms
144, “Lord, what is man that
Thou takest knowledge of him,
the child of mortal man that
Thou takest thought of him'.’”
Then, in the words of Psalm 94.
he gratefully acknowledges, “Had
not the Lord been my help, my
life had soon dwelt in the silent
grave."
As he walks haltingly, he is
sustained by this Psalm's reas
surance. “When I think my foot
slips. Thy love, O Lord, upholds
me...consolations from Thee de
light my soul.” Psalm 116 is a
similar source of strength and
comfort: “For He has saved my
life from death, my eyes from
tears and my foot from stumb
ling.”
Endowed with the Lord’s abun
dant goodness, loving favor and
bounteous kindness manifested
in times of personal crisis, he has
thanked Him many times for not
bringing him to need gifts or
loans on a permanent basis from
the hand of flesh and blood, for
their giving oft is grudging and
great the humiliation.
He practices daily the exhorta
tions of Psalm 82: “Render jus
tice to the poor and the father
less; do justice to the afflicted
and the destitute,” mindful from
personal experience of the
wretched plight of those in need
and the urgency of helping them
regain usefulness and human
dignity and becoming self-sup
porting. Since retirement 15 years
ago, after a satisfying and fulfil
ling career serving the needy, he
continues to apply previously ac
cumulated knowledge and expe
rience in helping existing welfare
institutions.
1 trust the reader will forgive
me if 1 now reveal that I am the
one referred to above. Having
reached the ninth anniversary of
my heart attack, full of satisfac
tion and optimism, the time has
come, w hile 1 can happily do so.
to express gratitude to the Lord
in this additional way for having
helped me face trying tribula
tions without residual emotional
scars; having led me to patiently
understand the problems of oth
ers; and having stimulated sensi
tivity and eagerness to be of ser
vice to human beings in need.
