City Lodge, but also because
“one of the requirements we make
of the hospitals is that they do
not dock the pay of the person
that is relieved for the day," Pro-
fis said.
Gate City boasts the largest
membership of any B'nai B’rith
lodge in the state, but its
members do not solelv make up
the roster of Pinch Hitters.
“Our intention is to go beyond
just the lodge," said Profis. “We
want to get the entire Jewish
community involved. In fact, our
long-term goal is to add other
projects to Pinch Hitters, it need
not he restricted to hospitals and
the Jewish Home. In the future,
we are willing to help the police
and fire departments, too."
Despite their more aggressive
effort to recruit volunteers to the
Pinch Hitters project. Profis said
he is not surprised at the out
pouring of support the project
has received.
“People realize they have a lot
of time on their hands,” he said.
“And. they arc very much aware
that this is a 'me' society and that
people tend to take a lot more
than they give. Pinch Hitters is
an opportunitv to give and to
have some fun."
Profis added that the project is
a politically and diplomaticallv
important thing for Jews to do.
“It shows the gentile community
here that Jews are respectful of
Christmas and that we wish ev
erybody well on Christmas I Jay.”
Pinch Hitters will also find
time Christmas Day to visit with
the children in the hospitals. I his
year when they visit the young
patients. Pinch Hitters won't go
empty-handed. Albert Maslia ot
Atlanta's Social Expressions has
donated S 1.000 worth ol toys to
give to the kids as holiday
presents.
In addition, all Pinch Hitters
will he so identified by T-shirts
being printed especially for the
occasion. The T-shirts are being
donated by Milton Karnin, a
member of Gate City Lodge.
Anyone interested in partici
pating in this brotherhood pro
ject on Christmas Day can con

support lor AIDS victims and
their families.
“AIDS is not someone else's
disease or problem." said Dr.
Boris O’Mansky of Baltimore,
chairman of the UAHC’s Com
mittee on AIDS. “It is ours and
we must fight it together.”
The UAHC is believed to he
the first national Jewish organi
zation that has taken action on
the Ai I)S issue.
Every Reform Jewish congre
gation w ill receive informational
material about AIDS including
guidelines for counseling fami
lies of victims of the disease,
names of support groups, hotlines
and a suggested sermon by early
next month. Dr. O’Mansky said.
Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler,
UAHC president, told the trus
tees: “T he challenge of our Jew
ish tradition is clear. Where there
is illness and suffering, we must
seek to comfort. Where there is
fear and prejudice, we must seek
to dispel it with knowledge and
education. Where there is optim
ism and a commitment to life, we
must week to preserve the human
spirit with hope and compassion."
In its resolution, the board of
trustees also expressed support
for a request by the National
Academy of Science for S3 bil
lion to step up public education
campaigns and accelerate research
on the prevention and treatment
of AIDS.
