Founders
I Rev. Finley Campbell
| To Speak at Vespers |
To initiate the week’s observance of our College’s found

vesper service, on the subject of “The Secret Heart.” A More
house alumnus, he received his M.A. degree from Atlanta
University, and studied six months at the Sorbonne, in Paris,
France. He is presently working toward attaining his Ph.D.
degree from the University of Chicago, and serves on the
Morehouse College faculty.
Mr. Campbell describes himself as being “not very cool,
but nice,” and is well known among the students as a dynamic
personality prone to provoke animated discussions on various
topics of current interest.
Founder’s Day Contests
On Thursday, April 7, two
traditional contests will be held
in Read Hall at 9:00 a.m.
These contests are the Know
Your Spelman Quiz and the
Original Song Contest.
The Know Your Spelman

sentatives from each of the
classes to determine which
representative has the most
comprehensive knowledge of
Spelman. Questions come from
the book, The Spelman Story,
and from the current copy of
the Spelman College Bulletin.
This year’s representatives
are: Senior Class, Judith Fen

Laurette Williams; and Fresh

Jane Sampson, president of
the SSGA, will serve as mod

REPORT OF GIFTS
As a part of each year’s ob
servance of Founders Day, a
rally is held. The amounts of
the gifts are reported immedi
ately following the Original
Song Contest which this year is
being held on Thursday, April
7, at 9 a.m. Each organization
is asked to give at least two
dollars, and faculty and staff
members pledge. Donations al
so come from friends and
alumnae of Spelman. In charge
of the report are Mrs. M. D.
Jordan and Mrs. Helen Brooks.
class of ’68.
This contest will be followed
by the Original Song Contest.
Each class will present a song
written by its members on
some aspect of Spelman. The
groups will be judged musical
ly by Dr. W. L. James. Ap
pearance will be rated by Mrs.
S. A. Young. The third judge
is Miss R. Clifton.
Both these contests are a
portion of the celebration of
Founders Day at Spelman.
Folk Dance
Travelogue
On April 7, the Physical
Education Department of Spel
man College will present a
Folk Dance-Travelogue. Each
year the Physical Education
Department presents a pro
gram in honor of Founders
Day; but this will mark the
first time that a Folk Dance
Class will constitute the entire
program.
The year 1966 marks the
second year that Spelman has
offered a class in Folk Danc
ing as a part of the curriculum
of the Physical Education De
partment.
The program will be in the
form of a travel through Mex
ico, parts of South America,
Latin America, Europe, Asia,
and the United States. In all,
sixteen different countries will
be represented. This promises
to be a very thrilling and en
joyable evening for those in
terested in attending.

FAMILY LUNCHEON
As a part of this year’s ob
servance of Founders Day, a
lunch is being held for the
Spelman family in Morgan
Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. on Thursday, April 7.
A special menu is planned,
and the commuting students
have been asked to sign up if
they plan to attend. Members
of the Spelman family are
being asked to stagger their
attendance so as to avoid over
crowding the dining hall.
Eighty-Fifth
Day
Dr. Sharvey G. Umbeck, President of Knox College, keynote speaker for
Founder's Day.
This year the formal Founders Day exercises will be held
on Thursday, April 7th, at 3:00 p.m. in Sisters Chapel. The
speaker for the occasion will be Dr. Sharvey Greiner Umbeck,
president of Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois.
Dr. Umbeck took his Bache
lors degree from Elmhurst
College, Elmhurst, Illinois, in
1933. He then entered the
University of Chicago to earn
his Masters degree in 1938,
and his Ph.D. in 1940. He
became assistant professor of
sociology at the college of
William and Mary in 1938.
He held this position until, in
1942, he became associate
professor of sociology. In 1945
Dr. Umbeck became chairman
of the sociology department.
While still holding this posi
tion he became dean of the
college in 1946, and functioned
in both capacities until 1949
when he became president of
the college.
Dr. Umbeck is listed in
Who’s Who in America. He
also holds memberships in the
American Sociological Asso
ciation and the Evangelical
and Reformed Church Clubs.
A native of Kankakee, Illi
nois, Dr. Umbeck is married
to the former Elsie Hoyle. The
couple has four children,
Frederick, John, Gretchen, and
Jane.
The ceremony immediately
preceding this service is the
one which, in years past, has
proved to be quite impressive,
as the seniors, donning their
caps and gowns for the first
time in their college career,
lead the underclassmen,
dressed in white, in the great
Founders Day processional.
The termination of this serv
ice officially begins Spelman
College’s Spring recess.
