To The Editor:
POSITION STATEMENT
Dear Editor:
First of all, 1 would like to
thank you for sending me an
issue of your newspaper. It is
always beautiful to hear from
people that you miss.
Secondly, I want to com
mend you on a fantastic
Feb/Mar. 1976 issue. The body
of your articles are truly what
we as students and faculty in
Hack institutions need to keep
alive in our minds. The question
cf where we are, and the
question of where we need to
&>■
1 particularly dug your
a-ticles on the late/great Dr.
Vivian W. Hendersons, Black
Higher Education by Dr.
Axelson & Dr. Sizemore,
Nsyeswah’s syncopated sould
chants on jazz/on life, sisters
Lindi and Soan’s views on life
and education at Spelman,
Margaret Lee’s political
analyses and the dynamic
illustrations of Rocita and
former classmate Tandra.
Debbi Newton’s brilliant
editorial on the future of
Spelman has a special place in
my mind/heart/soul. As one
who is interested in the
humanistic side of our
educational enrichment, and the
attempts of many to in
dustrialize love, creation,
learning and living, I hope that
we all deal with her editorial
with the third ear.
Finally, let me say that you
continue telling th truth about
life, and living a life that’s
true....Asante, Rick

R>sition Statement on the Next
President of Spelman College
fy Margaret Lee
Political Editor
Some things are taken for
granted and one of those things
taken for granted by a number
of spelman students, faculty and
administrators is that Spelman
College in 1976 will have a black
woman as its new president. In
fact, the prevailing question
diould be as to the type of black
woman that will help to mold the
future of Spelman College.
For ninety-five years
Spelaman College has educated
black women and none are
qualitied to assume the position
of president? Women of
Spelman College feel that it is a
total insult to black womanhood
to question that there exist no
black woman across the breathe
aid length of this nation who
can assume this position. We
demand that if this is the case,
that the Spelman student
gpvernment association and
concern Spelmanites for a black
woman president be allowed to
view the credentials of all ap-
jiicants.
Will Spelman remain true
to the authentic development of
Black womanhood and attain a
back woman president...the
challenge is yours.

Association.

The following position paper
was composed by Debbi
Newton, a senior political
science major and a member of
the Spelman SGA executive
cabinet. It was presented the to
College Administration on April
5th on behalf of the SSGA and
later forwarded to the college
frustee board. During April the
board will meet to discuss the
possibility of student
representation to the body.

Student vote on the college
Trustee Board
Ik Debbi Newton
Editor
In the Spelman College
statement of prupose, it is
maintained that Spelman
college “offers signal op-
prtunities for leadership for
black women.”
The aim of the college, as
stated in the purpose of the
institution, “is to provide the
students...educational op
portunities which will prepare
them for significant par
ticipation in society as in
dividuals, and as responsible
atizens of the nation and the
world. Equally important, (in
that aidm), is the total college
experience - designed to help
the student develop
discriminating judgement,
resourcefulness, and a deep
sens of sel-esteem.”
Specifically, Spelman
college, through it offerings,
provides opportunities for
student to develop, among other
©mpetencies, an awareness of
the social, economic, political,
noral, and religious changes
that are taking place in con
temporary life, and the desire to
translate personal convictions,
into energetic action.
It is because of these
energies, and because of these
actions, that the Spelman
Sudent now seeks an active
voice on the college trustee
board.
Why the student vote on
the college trustee board, you
may question? Because, as is
Sated in the student govern
ment handbook, “we have come
(here) to gain an understanding
of ourselves, of our fellows, of
cur society, and of our heritage.
Even though we seek un
derstanding through study, yet
there are also other activities -
©rial, religious, and govern
mental. which give our study
both balance and dimension.
There are our reasons for being
d Spelman, and in order that
students may feel a total sense
ti the involvement of the college
process, “we urge a student
u>te on the college trustee
board.
Ideally, Spelman gover
nment exists in order to unify
the student body through self-
government, to induce a
maximum of student apr-
ticipation and cooperation with
faculty and administration, in
matters pertaining to the
gpneral welfare of the students,
and to promote student
leadership. In addition,
however, the student gover
nment of Spelman campus,
exists as an instrument by which
Spelman students pledge their
loyalty to the high purpose of
promoting the best interest of
the college.
As with any body of
government, the success of
Sudent government depends to
a large extent upon individual
htegrity and group respon
sibility. We submit that there
a-e such individuals and groups
within the student community of
this campus, and that, further,
they are students who look
forward to implementing their
integrity in committment, their
responsibility for the
development of Spelman
G>llege.
Just as the spelman
community has formed the bsis
for reasonable and mature
thought and action among its
students, so now its the
students re-direct their maturity
and efforts toward the future of
Spelman College.
Finally the question arises,
what is representation in a
voting body?
Representation in a voting
body means a vote. It means
fiat we, the students, we the
school, have determined that it
is our right that we become a
voting member on the body that
gpverns the school.
And it is a right that we
cfemand, for seldom are due
rights coerced in any less
feshion.
