Pisces Galleries
Celebration
By Angela Phoenix
Strolling down Gordon
Street near the West End Mall,
you might notice among the
series of regular shops, a new
and innovative addition.
Venturing through the door
will bring forth the realization
that you have just entered a
very unique art gallery. You
will immediately recognize the
familiar smile as that of Mr.
Kevin Moore, who has recently
established the Pisces
Galleries.
A careful observation of
Moore’s wares will reveal
exhibits ranging from local
artists to skilled craftsmen of
Africa. So deep is his
commitment to artistic
appreciation that one
eventually comes to the
realization that Moore, a
Morehouse College graduate,
is definately about the
business of enhancing the
quality of this community.
Moore feels that the facility
provides a much needed and
long overdue vehicle' for
expansion and appreciation of
art related activities in and
around Atlanta. ‘Pisces
Galleries is primarily designed
to provide artistic individuals
space for exhibits, workshops
and studio space for their
original and marketable
creation. He states that his
motivation stems from the
absence of a viable market
place for the exhibition and
sale of creations of artists,
crafts persons and designers.
Pisces Galleries is located at
869 Gordon Street, S.W., near
Sears. For a unique and
enlightening experience in art
appreciation, visit the Pisces
Galleries and speak with Mr.
Moore, who welcomes
discussion and suggestions
from any individual having a
common interest in the arts.
Studio musicians, that is
musicians who perform on
records, T.V. jingles, radio
commercials, and rarely show
their faces in public for tours,
or what have you have
recently begun to shed the
back-up musician stigma and
are recording solo efforts with
almost unrestrained zeal.
Of course many of them
should be content to stay
unknown simply because they
have a tendency to become
trapped by some of the same
musical formulas they sought
to escape.
Notably, with this surge of
creativity some musicians
exhibit.a little more flexibility
than others. Specifically with
regard to horns, Tower of
Power is considered to be the
best front line in the business.
However when those same
cats were young kids, trying to
horde r&b singles so they could
tap the source trombonist.
George Bohannon, trumpeter,
Oscar Brashear, and reed man,
Ernie Watts were paying dues
that would later
insure them the honor of being
the most sought after
hornmen in contemporary
music, the position these three
men, along with Plas Johnson,
Jon Faddis, Garnett Brown
presently maintain.
The above musicians, plus
keyboardist, arranger,
composer Reggie Andrews,
and a young, tight rhythm
section, Karma, as well as
other West Coast based jazz
performers are offering a
refreshing hybrid of
alternative jazz listening. In a
way of a prediction this West
Coast sound seems to be easily
felt by the public, thus this
sound may become the popular
mode of expression in the
future.
“Celebration” is alive with
this fresh sound. Although
these musicians are veterans
of years, they still manage to
fester a continuing inspiration
to listen for more.
As previously implied there
is no concrete definition of
music for the seventies. With
this freedom comes the
dilemma of a Freddie.
Hubbard, or Gene Harris (can
you still produce after all this
change?) is inevitable. Most of
today’s music is boring. Yet
some musicians do find ways
to remain interesting without
sacrificing collective
creativity; Kraina does that.
Along with the low-mixed
vocals of Syreeta, and Denise
Williams on compositions like
“So True,” and “Kwanza”
enhance the swing quality of
the album.
After one listen it will be
obvious Karma is not setting
any revolutionary trends.
Instead, it’s just solid artists
working their influences
overtime, consumating in a
product that develops, and
intensifies with each song.
