South Africa Workers
continued from page three
gold mines in South Africa
receiving 17 rand a month
while 39,386 whites were em
ployed receiving 354 rand a
month. In the coal mines 67,-
249 Blacks were employed
receiving 18 rand a month
while 8,173 whites were em
ployed receiving 350 rand a
month. (South Africa
Government news sources and
South African Institute of
Race Relations). Indeed this is
apartheid in practice.
There are other corporations
that employ Blacks in South
Africa that help to perpetuate
the apartheid regime. Many of
them are American owned
corporations. General Motors
South Africa employs 5,500
workers, 3,500 of whom are
Black. Typical of corporations
in South Africa, all the top
positions are reserved for
whites. In fact a plant
manager said, “We are
dependent on the skilled white
man to keep us in business and
the coloured man to keep us
running.” (Gurney, The
South African Connection,
pg. 190.) The starting wage for
Blacks at the GM engine plant
is 28 rand a month. (Church
Investments Corporations
and Southern Africa, pg.
69). Again these types of wages
only serve to perpetuate
apartheid in South Africa
which keeps Africans from
making any type of ad
vancement.
As can be seen, the Black
worker under the apartheid
system is one of the most op
pressed groups of people in the
world. A change, however, is
occurring in South Africa as
evident by the recent
liberation victories in Angola
and Mozambique, and the
struggles presently occurring
in Namibia and Zimbabwe. As
a- result it appears that
Voster’s time to continue to
perpetuate his racist white
regime is limited.
All major changes have
come about through
revolutions and perhaps in the
near future a revolution will oc
cur in South Africa. It will be a
violent revolution, for Voster
has made it very clear his inten
tions of continuing the prsent
apartheid system. It is also
very likely that the Black
worker will play a major part
in the revolution for this group
of people have been confronted
daily with the apartheid
system. They possibly will
form a united front with the
presently expelled liberation
movements and overthrow the
apartheid regime.

Record Review

Mendes, Airto and Flora, and
Deodato, has released a solo
album . His vocals range fom
an Afro-Latino falsetto to a
low throaty growl. His guitar
playing is highly rhythmic.
Backed by Herbie Hancock,
Wayne Shorter, Airto and
South America’s best
musicians, “Milton” is the
freshest approach to South
American music in years.
Grover Washington Jr.-A
Secret Place; KUDU32
Surprisingly this album is
sronger than the last one and
is actually more creative than
anything Grover’s done on
wax. George Mra and Anthony
Jackson are two of the most
underrated bassists (acoustic
and electric respectively) and
their interplay with Grover’s is
inventive, particularly Mra on
Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin
Dance.” I’m not partial to
Grover, it’s just a good album.
John Lee and Gerry Brown-
Still Can’t Get Enough; BN-
UA701-G
Actually on their first album
“Mango Sunrise” Lee and
Brown didn’t say all that
much. This time around they
milk contemporary music for
all it’s worth. Laced with good
production by Skip Drink-
water and guest artists like
Gary Bartz, the Brecker
Brothers and Doonie Smith.
These Philadelphian
musicians could unseat fellow
Philadelphian Norman
Conners as pop/jazz stars of
the year.
Also this month for more
traditional jazz fans are the
Chess/Janus Jazz masters
Series Z which includes James
Moody, John KJemmerand a
surprise Max Roach/Art
Blakely. Bluenote has
released five new re-issues
highlighted by iHorace
Silver’s trio sides (which
features Billy Cobham fresh
from the Air Force and Freddie
Hubbard’s “Firedays.” Look
for a reggae rap next time it’s
bubbling.
Women in the Bottom
The women in the bottom
climb the bus
too tired for the cold chit chat of the day
they smell of Crisco, mollasses
Sulfur 8, or bergamont grease
or hot comb burnt hair
to a smooth shiny straight look.
Cooking their food
making up beds
envisioning a world inside their heads.
Old clothes will be handed down to the new
generation of children
takin’ ol’ whitey’s word of hopes for a better
word
and on Sunday, shouting, screaming
with, now and then, a good song for the Lord.

if the myth exists
It’s said we’re superficial and truely just a myth.
Yet how can this be prophesized; for in fact we do exist.
It’s often said we’re boursousie; elitest in our souls.
Yet I qualify my existence, what all that I may hold.
There is a special dignity and pride within my soul,
and for this I am told I cast a Spelman mold.
No category may hold me,I out reach categories yet to exist
in believing in myself.
I deny no one the right to believe in themselves.
So why maintain a myth.
If you take out the time to check out the myth.
You will see that what exist is in itself a MYTH.

I’m searching for something!
Don’t quite know what it is?
Smoking pot, drinking liquor,
Lying, and cheating.
Don’t want to sleep.
Can’t eat.
I gotta find it.
It’s not a phoney—
I got one of those for a friend.
It’s not fake—
I got one of those for a mate.
It’s not artificial—
I got high on that last night.
It’s not temporary—
I had him last night.
It’s not make-believe—
That’s the world I’m living in.
It’s not faulty—
I had that when I was into astrology.
It’s not a mistake—
That was my child.
It’s not confusion—
That’s my mind.
