Page 2 - Spelman Spotlight
EDITORIAL
By Lei Charlton
It is very important to
examine a school year in
retrospect in order to better
understand the present and to
make predictions about the
future. One certainly would
look upon the 1976-77 term at
Spelman with mixed emotions.
The first semester brought
little in the way of extra
curricular activities. President
Donald Stewart and poet Dave
Matthews were two among the
few convocation speakers. Ac
tivities recognizing Halloween
were held. The Frederick
Taylor Dance Theater
performed a concert of African
dance and works
choreographed to the blues
and ragtime. The annual
Christmas Carol Concert was
held.
Student morale was op
timistic but tapered off toward
the semester’s end. Just when
conditions seemed to perk up,
the cold weather threw
another curve and the second
semester got off to a bad start.
The upset routine disoriented
many people. The “vacations”
kept coming. Students, ad
ministrators and staff grew ac
customed to the breaks and
when the time came, it was dif
ficult to work.
There have been more ac
tivities of interest this
semester. Some members of
the Spelman Choir
participated in the Inaugural
exercises for President Carter.
Activities centered around
Founder’s Day helped to bring
momentary excitement and
unity to campus. Dr. Jackie
Fleming presented her
research study on Black
women and their fear of
success which more people
should have benefitted from.
The Town Hall Meetings,
designed by an Apathy Com
mittee consisting of students,
faculty and administrators,
were at least good in what they
attempted to do. Convocation
speakers include Carl Rowan
and Andrew Young. The
philosophy club sponsored a
lecture series.
Many of the problems
Spelman faces stem from
student/student, and student
/ faculty - administrator
relationships. The matter of
protocol can sometimes com
plicate communication.
Students complain about “get
ting the run around.” Faculty
and administrators complain
about the “trouble-makers.”
Students victimize other
students. There is a resolution
to this type of problem and it
involves introspection on the
part of all of us. We need to so
some serious soul-searching
and internal house cleaning.
Spiritual rebirth is a remedy.
What this will lead to is
emotional maturity; people
will find themselves more
tolerant and patient and better
able to cope with daily stress
and strain.
It is true that there is noth
ing new under the sun. Many
of Spelman’s problems are not
new nor are they all peculiar to
Spelman. The problem is the
people and once the people free
their souls enough to be honest
and loving, the problems will
free the people.
Once this is accomplished,
Spelman will grow. The
Spelman family will be open to
different programs in a
different atmosphere. Next
year International Affairs
may become an issue here; an
active issue with active
participants. The arts may
flourish. Students may become
students again and ad
ministrators may become ad
ministrators again.
We’ve just grown so far out
of touch with feeling and in
tuition that we’re grappling
with our identities. The answer
is the return of the basics — to
love, peace and happiness.
And what, beyond these can
one strive for?
Student Rep Board
By Pamela D. James
Karen Moore, Phyllis Ward,
and Teree Caldwell were
chosen by the student body to
be considered for the student
position on the Board of
Trustees of Spelman. Each has
her own special interest and
reasons for wanting the
position. It will be the
student’s purpose on the board
to serve as a member for a one
year term with full voting
priviledges.
According to Terree
Caldwell, she feels that a
student member on the board
will be very effective. Because
the student is familiar with the
student’s needs and desires for
a better campus life, she will be
able to give insight into the
problems students experience
while at Spelman.
Phyllis Ward and Karen
Moore also share Terre’s sen
timents. Phyllis feels that the
board will probably have to ad
just to hearing and listening to
a student’s view point. Also,
she thinks there will be great
cooperation between the
student representative and the
faculty representative.
Karen Moore, feels that being
selected by the student body to
be considered for the position
makes the student represen
tative a legitimate
membership. Also, because the
student lives on campus, she
has first hand knowledge of
GUEST EDITORIAL
By Pamela Dawn Jackson
Did you know that there are
Born - again and Holy Ghost
filled Christians at Spelman
College? We, the members of
the Body of Christ, have
realized that God loves
everyone, and he has a
wonderful plan for each of our
lives. The reason that most
people are not experiencing the
abundant life that God has
promised is that “all have
sinned and fall short of the
glory of God” (Rom. 3:23), and
that ‘ ‘the wages of sin is death -
(separation from God)” (Rom.
6:23). Jesus Christ is the only
way for man to get to God.
“Christ died for our sins, show
ing his love, while we were yet
sinners” (Rom. 5:8). Jesus said,
“I am the way, and the truth,
and the life; No One comes to
the Father, but through me.”
(St. John 14:6).
To know God and experience
his love and abundant plan for
our lives, we have received
Jesus Christ as our personal
Saviour and Lord. “But as
many as received him, to them
He gave the right to become
Children of God, even to those
who believe in His name.” (St.
John 1:12). We received Christ
through faith,” For by Grace
we have been saved through
faith, and that not of
ourselves, it is the gift of God:
not as a result of Works, that
No One should boast.” (Eph.
2:8-9). We experienced a New
Birth, “Except a man be born
again, he cannot see the
Kingdom of God.” (St. John
3:3). We personally asked
Christ to come into our lives,
“Behold, I (Christ) stand atthe
door (of all our hearts) and
knock; if any one hears my
voice and opens the door, I will
come into him” (Rev. 3:20). We
turned to God from ourselves,
and repented. Then we asked
him to forgive us of our sins
and believed, through faith,
that he would come into our
lives. We have yielded
ourselves to Christ and He,
now, sits on the throne of our
lives.
We all need Christ in our
lives as Lord and Saviour, and
we need to be filled with the
power of God.
I urge each member of the
Spelman Community to get to
know God. I have, and I have
found Him to be thebest thing
that has Ever happened to
Me!!!!!!!
Placement for
Qualified
Teachers
The Educational Placement
Bureau announces a service to
aid qualified teachers in ob
taining a position in their
chosen field.
The Bureau of Director says,
“It is amazing how many
prospective teachers are being
trained each year and are
unable to find a position.
Educational placement bureau
was founded to help these
teachers. We have extended
our coverage to include
elementary, secondary and
college level placements. One
of the biggest problems is sim
ply informing teachers that we
do exist and are available to
help them.
The Bureau offers its
services to educators by being
a resource center for creden
tials, supplying names of
schools with vacancies and

Whatever the turnout, it can
almost be assured that having
a student on the board will
certainly prove to be interes

problems Spelman women
face, they will also have to be
more attentive, sensitive, and
open to students’ perspectives.

Speak Out
One of Spelman’s most
appealing attributes is her
beautiful landscape. The
“yard,” as the grounds of
Spelman are affectionately
and not so affectionately
called, is green and blooming,
full of Spring.
So why not show it off? Why
leave “home” and con
summate our relationship with
Spelman in a large and foreign
territory?
We want our graduation in
the sunshine on Spelman’s
lawn.
