A.I.D.S. Awareness Week
by Adriance Kapayl Keepler
A.I.D.S., the disease that
is uppermost in most people’s
minds is also shrouded in a
cloud of rumor and misinfor
mation. To help diffuse this
problem within the Atlanta
University Center, Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Incor
porated Eta Kappa Chapter,
sponsored A.I.D.S. Aware
ness Week. Beginning
November 16th with the
distribution of current liter
ature and a display
promoting “safe sex” prac
tices, the week started with
a bang.
Tuesday, a videotape
viewing was presented with
Dr. Jessie Sherrod (National
A.I.D.S. Specialist) featured
on “Tony Brown’s” Journal
during “prime time“ of
Manley College Center.
The highlight of the week
was an informed panel
discussion with Reverend
Joseph Lowery (head of
S.C.L.C.), Dr. William Alex
ander (Epidimiologist More
house Medical School) and
Dr. Sandra McDonald
(A.I.D.S. Atlanta.) There was
standing room only, indi
cating a desire on the part of
the Spelman Community to
learn as much as possible
about the subject. Statistics
such as 52 percent of all
women with A.I.D.S. are
Black women and 59 percent
of all children with A.I.D.S.
are black children 1 brought
the disease very close to
home. ^Minority AIDS
Project Pamphlet.) The audi
ence solicited answers on how
to avoid contracting the
deadly virus. Suggestions
made by the panel and
extracted from the “Minority
AIDS Project Pamphlet”
follow this article.
The week rounded out with
the movie “An Early Frost”
on Thursday and a “Gym
Jam” to raise proceeds to be
donated to children with
A.I.D.S. in Atlanta. The week
proved to be a huge success,
for now Spelman College is a
more enlightened community
with concern to the A.I.D.S.
epidemic.

Can You Dance?
by Simone R. Blake
One-two-three-four.. .Move
that leg, reach for the sky,
straighten you back, leap,
jazz runs, give attitude!!! Get
off the bar! If your tired, you
don’t need to be here.
Adolfo Ware is here. Where
you ask? Here at Spelman
College creating movements
and methods that can make
you a dancer.
S-t-r-e-t-c-h... two-three-
four, shake your chest.
Rigourous, vigorous, painful,
delightful, these are the
conflicting, yet terrific sensa
tions many students are
experiencing as they team up
weekly with Adolfo in Read
Hall.
Adolfo is a native New
Yorker who started dancing
by watching Jean Kelly, Ann
Margret, and Lola Folana on
television. Their intriguing
moves prompted him to start
dancing and he hasn’t
stopped yet. He started his j
performing career by dancing
with James Brown in concert
at age seven. Ten years later
under the stern training of
Alvin Alley and then later
the Dance Theatre of
Harlem, Adolfo perfected his
God-given talent. Adolfo left
New York to teach dance in
Japan, however, he ended up
not only teaching but chore
graphing and performing
there as well.
Yeah, yeah, you heard right
the first time, Adolfo is here,
at Spelman College Now!!! He
teaches jazz, modern, and
ballet dance. He loves
Spelman as much as his
students love him. Many
students in his class have
been dancing for years,
grasping artistic style
quickly, while others struggle
through the strenuous warm
up and ten second show of
dance patterns. Students
flock to attend his class, some
auditing, while others take it
for credit. There is always an
audience standing outside
the door watching his funky
steps thinking and wishing
they too could do that. Adolfo
is a demanding perfectionist
who does not take “I can’t” for
an answer. Though he is
modest when talking to him,
he is a show-off when it comes
to dancing. Adolfo has the
students crawling, rolling,
running, jumping, and
leaping to his funky choreo
graphies and fast paced
music. All of his students,
though some were frustrated
at first, enjoy his class and
though it hurts they believe
the reward is worth it.
Adolfo taught a couple of
classes last spring and he
and Mrs. Spriggs, the head of
the Fine Arts department,
realized the need for him.
Adolfo felt that teaching at
Spelman would be a very
positive experience. He felt
that there was no place
comparable where he could
teach so many creatively
diverse Black women at one
time. As assistant director
for the Spelman College
dance troupe he helps
enhance their performance
quality and technique. Aldofo
is here to produce, and to
work with those who wish to
learn. As one of his students,
I strongly urge the Spelman
community to embrace the
opportunity to work and
develop your own talents
with Aldofo. If you do not care
to dance, I am sure you will
enjoy watching the Spelman
College dance troupe’s
performance in March.
Sisters Beware
by Teresa Leary
For the past month or so I
have had the uncanny expe
rience of having a man not
only expose himself in front
of me, but to also to have this
pervert continue to find me
and attempt to scare me with
his presence. I am afraid of
this man, but I am more mad
than I am afraid. I have tried
over and over unsuccessfully
to have him caught, but he is
too fast for me and the secu
rity guards. This frightens
me because he looks neither
threatening, nor weird. He
looks like an average black
man, except for the beady
dark eyes I will never forget.
The last time I saw him I felt
