SGA On The Move (Con’t)
Spring 1988: A Proposal For The Future
by Dawne Mitchell
Has this semester seemed
drab, lacking substance or
excitement? Not enough
happening for you? Are you
pleased with Student
Government’s performance? I
asked myself these very
questions, in hopes that I
might find reasonable solu
tions. When I chose to run for
an office similar inquiries
came to mind. As a result, my
campaign slogan asked,
“Where Do We Go From
Here?” My response
followed...“to effective lead
ership.” Effective leadership
in my opinion, denotes profi
cient, professional, enthu
siastic, consistent, creative,
and quality guidance. I knew
these ingredients would have
an outstanding effect on you.
Now that a semester has
passed and student apathy
has increased rather than
decreased, I’m puzzled still.
Where is the SSGA going
wrong? Obviously we are not
performing up to your
expectations.
I realized the answer to the
problem but I have also real
ized the efforts it will take to
reverse the attitudes that
prevail our campus. In light
of our recent transition, I am
accepting the challenge to
make a change! I began on
November 23, 1987 at the
second Student Body
Meeting. At this time several
suggestions were given by
students, as mechanisms to
change student apathy and
lack of participation, namely,
a suggestion box, a student
survey, more prestigious
female speakers, and large
advertisements for events.
We are initiating and imple
menting these suggestions as
of print. We are committed to
serving you! Please realize
that you are what matters.
Everything we do is essen
tially for your enjoyment, and
well-roundness.
I want to assure you that
the Student Government
Association is more than
capable to serve you effi
ciently. The transition has
been a smooth and profes
sional one. Keeping in mind
the spirit of sisterhood, we
were able to rise above the
trite rumors and narrow-

“Yes, because although there

Do you find the course load
here at Spelman as rigorous
as the course load at your
home institution?
“Yes, I find the work load here
at Spelman as rigorous as
Wheaton.”
Stacey Jordan

“I’m taking 5 classes and 2 of
them are as rigorous if not
more so, but the other 3
aren’t.”

Poetry At Spelman
by Margo V. Perkins
Despite the drizzle, the
cold, and the crowd-luring
Thursday night line-up on
t.v., they came. Sponsored in
November by the Spelman
English Club, “Focus on
Poetry; An Intimate Gath
ering for Sharing Original
Works” was a celebration
of creative genius which
brought together talented
students from both Spelman
and Morehouse Colleges.
Reciting their original works
on the program were Joe
Beckett, Sonya Brooks,
Yvette Dalton, Gregory
Fowler, Angela George,
Michael Gillespie, Tyrone
Johnson, Tonya McGriff,
Harry Parson III, Michelle
Temple, Patrice Thompson,
Leslie Wood, and Kenneth
Zakee.
The English Club wishes to
warmly thank all those who
came to enjoy as well as to
recite. Because the event was
so enthusiastically received,
the club looks forward to
sponsoring a future reading
in early 1988.
minded thinking. We
encourage you to continue to
be respectful women and do
the same. Remember
through love, even the most
disastrous situations are
overcome. We have taken the
initial step to make Spring
’88 a better and more exciting
semester. I can only
encourage you to get involved
and make a difference.
I am eager to serve 100%.
My motto for Spring ’88 is:
DYNAMIC, DIVERSIFIED
and DETERMINED WO
MEN making a change for
YOU.
