Holiday Prayers The Doublemint Twins
by Kegina Taylor
The Spelman experience is
one which is the beginning of
a realization that we as
Black women must respect
and love ourselves so that we
may foster these ideas within
others.
At this time of Thanks
giving, I extend my gratitude
to you, Dear Lord, for
blessing us with such a
dynamic institution as
Spelman College.
Heavenly Father, I pray
that you bestow your bless
ings upon young women who
are Spel-bound.
I pray that they use your
guidance as they decide upon
the institution where they
will continue their
educations.
Lord, help them to realize
their beauty and self-worth.
Help them to realize that
through faith in You, all
things are possible.
It is my prayer that future
Spelmanites will be as
fortunate as I have been,
experiencing the love and
sisterhood that exists
amongst the Spelman
Community.
Most precious Lord, please
bless by future Spelman
sisters and keep them safe as
they make their journey
through this renowned insti
tution of higher learning.
These blessings I ask in
Your name.
Amen

Mother and Father:
As your child, I would like
to thank you. For teaching us
the ways of Our Lord Jesus
Christ.
Helping us to remember the
many blessings he has
bestowed upon us.
The roof over our heads,
clothes on our backs, food on
our table and happiness in
our hearts would not have
been possible without your
Love, Knowledge and
Wisdom.
Our Heavenly Father:
Thank you for granting us
with the most precious gifts;
The gifts of our beautiful
children.
Help us to continue to
enhance their growth, stim
ulate their minds, correct
their wrongdoings, add to
their individual beauty and
generate your love by guiding
them down the path of
righteousness.
In Your name we pray.
Amen

Our Heavenly Father—
We would like to take this
time out to thank you for
those things in life often over
looked or taken for granted.
How precious to us is the
first light that shines on our
eyelids each new morning to
let us know that we have
been blessed enough to see
another day.
There can be no value put
on the smiles that light the
faces of our friends, without
whom we would not be
complete.
How soothing is the
laughter of our children who
play innocently in the yard.
Fortunately, stillblind to the
cruel ways of this world.
Most important is the gift
of Love, given at the time
that you deem perfect.
Thank you for all these
blessings and more which
make our lives complete—but
are sometimes forgotten. In
your name we forever humbly
pray.
Amen

They’ve been seen. They’ve
been talked about, but how
much is really known about
them? They are known
around Spelman’s campus as
“The Doublemint Twins,” but
their names are Alyssa
Aileene and Angela Aileen
Nelson. They are freshmen
majoring in Engineering and
Physics from Saginau, Mich
igan. The twins’ popularity
stems not only from the fact '
they they are identical, but
they also dress alike
everyday!
There are many questions
that Spelman students have
about the twins; the most
popular being, “Why do they
always dress alike?!” Well,
the twins haven’t always
dressed alike. There was a
time during the sixth and
seventh grades when the
twins chose to dress differ
ently as a means of finding
their own identities. Even
then, there was an unex
plained instance in which the
twins independently chose
the same outfits. The twins
resumed dressing alike in
the eighth grade and
continue to do so as a means
of showing their low and
affection for each other, plus,
it makes it easier for one to
find the other in a crowd! If
the twins did not dress alike,
as Angela put it, “We’d feel
like something was missing.”
Their dressing alike is a
tradition born out of their
sisterhood.
Although the twins look
alike on the outside, they are
definitely two distinct indi
viduals on the inside. Angela
is the quieter sister and
Alyssa is the outgoing one.
One twin though, is not domi
nant over the other as some
people may believe. The
twins believe that their
different personalities
compliment each other.
Alyssa is talented artisti
cally. Her drawings are apart
of the decorations in the
twins’ room. Angela has the
gift of being able to write
poetry. One of her poems,
entitled, “A Proud Black
Woman Who Has Dreams
and Realities,” is even
patented. The twins do have
basically the same tastes in
men, though. They don’t
usually like the same guy,
but if they do, and they can’t
tell which twin he likes, they
will leave him alone.
The twins are definitely as
close as two sisters can be
and it helps that they respect
and understand each other.
The twins rarely argue, and
they know that there are
times when one might need a
break from the other...but
that’s not too often either.
a chill and a strange feeling
before I even saw him. And
let me tell you the chill did
not come from my
surrounding atmosphere.
This man seems to know
the library very well because
he is able to escape and reach
the front desk area before I
am able to get close. He looks
as if he could be a graduate
student. However, the packet
of papers he carries around
could be a facade, so that I
(and others) will believe that
he has a purpose at the
library. He is always looking
for books. The last time I saw
him, I attempted to go and
tell the front desk, but of
course the man got there
before I did.
For many whites, this could
bring about more compassion
and empathy to the situation
in South Africa, with the
desire to advocate racial
unity instead of hostility and
defensiveness. For me, Woods
reminded me that although
many whites are anti-Black,
all whites are not. Some
times, in the midst of my
heated, and strong feelings
about racism, I forget this.
At the time of this article,
there have no forums on “Cry
Freedom.” I suggest that an
organization sponsor a forum
on this movie to discuss
apartheid, and what we as
students can do to help bring
about social change in South
Africa.
Most importantly, we must

Angela and Alyssa are very
mature for their 18 years.
They have their situation as
identical twins who also
dress alike, in a world where
everyone is trying to be
different, in perspective.
They know that although
they look the same on the
outside, they are two distinct
individuals. They want
people to realize that also,
especially their Spelman
sisters.
Each time I see him he
disrupts my life. Why is a
Black man bothering a Black
woman trying to better
herself? In these hard times
we don’t need weirdos like
him to contend with. There is
already AIDS, teen preg
nancy, and so much more. I
wish that Mister Weirdo
would go somewhere else
with his problem and leave
me and others alone because
one day he is going to flash
the wrong person and who
knows which one of Robert
Woodruffs old, heavy books
will land on his perverted
head. My Spelman sisters, Be
Careful and Beware.
organize groups within the
AUC (not only Morehouse
and Spelman), to go to see the
movie. There is a need to
sponsor groups of people,
especially children, from low
income areas to see the
movie. Otherwise many
people less fortunate than
ourselves will never see it.
Forums with people in the
community around us,
including the children, would
be constructive in discussing
their ideas as well as ours. I
contend that knowledge is
definitely, unmistakably
POWER. What we don’t
know CAN hurt us and the
more we know, the more we,
as Blacks, can achieve.
Presbyterian
School.
Our first November
activity was the presentation
of the movie “Mandela” in
Bessie Strong. We then held
a Lupus Disease Seminar
with the Lupus Foundation
of America which proved to
be very informative. The
ladies of Mu Pi chapter deco
rated a Thanksgiving basket
for the SGA Thanksgiving
Day Rally in which we
received Honorable Mention.
We are presently sponsoring
an essay writing contest
dealing with the role of the
Black woman in the year
2000. The winner of the
contest will receive a book
scholarship. Our clothing
and canned food drive is still
going on as well. The boxes
are located in the dorms with
the proceeds benefiting an
African village. Our last
event for the month was the
donation of a plaque to
Sister’s Chapel to celebrate
their 60th anniversery.
We have several activities
planned for December. We
will sponsor a Literacy
Project with Atlanta Univer
sity as well as a toy drive for
toddlers. We are supporting
the SGA in their Black Doll
Donation and a Christmas
tree will be contributed to a
needy family.
I am happy to announce
that the ladies of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mu Pi Chapter are working
very hard on Spelman’s
campus and in the commu
nity to promote sisterhood.
We would like to wish all of
our Spelman sisters a
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND
A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
